Liquids on Flights

I think they should ban all things sharp, it's too great a risk.
Because a ban on anything sharp would (1) not be effective in keeping things safe and (2) inconvenience people. Why inconvenience people for something that doesn't make flying safer?

There is no sense banning things that are somewhat sharp (small scissors, screwdrivers) unless you are going to ban things that could become sharp (a piece of glass).

What you really want to do is stop anything that could bring down the plane. You can't do that with a screwdriver or a broken piece of glass.

Wow I did not have ANY probs when leaving from our home airport over the sandwhich bags, in fact they were making jokes about it. I had like 2 in each carry on full of shampoo, toothpaste, make-up, things of that nature, and never had a problem. Now when we left for home MCO were a bit more rude, they deemed my glass cinderella as suspicious and I had to ask them please don't just rip the box open. I just did not have the other size, and never really use them, so I figured it would be ok as long as it was the correct size of fluids, ziploc, and see thru. PS. I did not bring ziplocs back on carry on for the flight home, just my gifts I bought from wdw, so can't say how MCO would be with the ziploc size, but home was fine with it.

You got lucky. You are allowed ONE in each carryon.

Tiggergirl if you ban all sharp things here's what YOU won't be carrying on
1. Any writing implement
2. Any eating implement
3. Nail file
4. Comb
5. Brush etc.

And you will not be ANY safer.

If your flight crew did leave the flight deck during flight without a FA standing there as the door was opened and closed the crew violated the FAA regulations on flight safety. (NOTE: leaving the deck PRIOR to or AFTER flight does not require the FA move)

Any increase in safety is not due to the nonscense the TSA puts us through, it's due to the barred doors and the dilegence of REAL law enforcment (FBI, CIA, your local cops!)

The TSA website does not say the bottles have to be labeled. The TSA agents themselves seem to think that it must be "properly" labled. So I went to Target and bought "el cheapo" stuff, rinsed out the bottles and put whatever I want in them. :lmao: The TSA is now "happy" that they know what I have and it's safe.....

If you want an increase in safety and not "window dressing" perhaps you should ask your elected officals WHY the newer equipment that can detect explosives is STILL not delployed???? Perhaps you should ask the TSA why ALL airport employees are not screened every day and EVERY time they come into the secure area. (After all one of the "wanna be"terriorists in London was an airport employee!)

Please listen to Horace and Bavaria. They have posted the links and the facts. I have always used Horace's advice and it's never failed me yet!

They don't make the kind we use in travel size or wipes. I am also not willing to chance that they don't have it there when we land. We are using magical express, so no chance for a pit stop at a store.

See Carol's note above on TSA - you want to be careful transferring items from one to another in case you encounter an overzealous agent.

If you DO bring along the sunscreen and it gets taken away, don't react too much. Then pick up a bottle in the aiprot on landing, in your hotel gift shop, or at the park (I realize that it may not be the same brand, but they do have a variety at WDW)

Hope it works for you!

We used to see a lot of complaining about the new security measures, yet Carol is the only poster who I have seen report that she did convey her thoughts to elected officials, etc.

I think that is a more effective method of expressing concerns and if more people would write about this (or any topic which disturbs them) to the appropriate agency/official, it may result in positive change.

Just to clarify...

It's not one 1-quart clear zip bag per carry-on. It's one 1-quart clear zip bag per passenger.

If two or more passengers share a single carry-on, they can each have one 1-quart bag.

If one passenger has two carry-ons (technically one carry-on and one personal item), that passenger can still only have one 1-quart bag.

Thanks for confirming that... I see it on non-US flights as well.

And on most flights (not just United) that I fly, nobody can wait or stretch their legs in the galley area near the cockpit. On United, they ask that Economy passengers use the restroom in their ticketed cabin; not just to reduce traffic in First, but to reduce the traffic in general and allow the cabin crew to monitor that traffic.

I don't know how long your trip is, but you might want to consider mailing this special sunblock to your resort ahead of time if you are flying carryon-only.

3 oz. of sunblock is only enough for about 6 hours for one person in the Florida sun (The ACS recommends using 1 oz. of sunblock per application for sufficient coverage.) If you re-package it you would probably be able to fit 9 oz. into the baggie, but not much else.

Thanks for all the great info, I was just beginning to pack when I remembered the no liquid rule. Haven't flown in some time! The link to the 3-1-1 site was very helpful. I'm shocked spear guns are not allowed on planes, I guess I will be leaving mine at home! ;-)

Remember that you are allowed 1 ziploc baggie with liquids for each ticketed passenger. It seemed to me that the people who were prepared just received glances and breezed through. I did see some who were not prepared and these people had been asked to step aside, prohibited from touching their bags. I packed travel sizes of anything remotely liquid--lotions, toothpaste, lip gloss, contact solutions. I also packed 1 baggie with medicines, including a full liquid bottle of children's Sudafed, placed it in the plastic bin, and "declared" it. Contact lens solution might even be considered medicine and might fall into this declared bag.

They allow what they allow. If you (and most of the thinking public) feel the allowances are unfair, then contact TSA, or the Department of Homeland Security, or your elected representatives, and say so. By all means let them know it's keeping you from flying. Complaining about it here does nothing.

I take it you are using a universal 'you' and not a specific 'you' ie you are not directing that towards me - I am one who advocates writing, rather than complaining here to an audience which cannot effect change.

Jeeeeeeeeez! this is for carry on stuff, right? so if i shove my toothepaste, shampoo and stuff in my suitcase which i check in, it doesn't have to be in a plastic bag?

i only carry on my purse/bag.

Yes. The 3-1-1 rule is for liquids and gels in carry-ons.

You can put regular containers of sunscreen, toothpaste, shampoo, and other such liquids and gels in your checked luggage. Regarding your question, "it doesn't have to be in a plastic bag?" -- yes; there are no security rules requiring those items to be in plastic bags in your check luggage, but it can be a good idea anyway to use plastic bags in case liquids leak due to pressure changes or rough handling.

do you have to put all medicines in a ziploc? even ones that aren't liquid? are inhalers considered liquid? I plan on putting most everything except medications in my checked luggage.. I will fill empty sippy cups after we pass security from a store, but I wanted to bring snacks from home like cheerios, gummy bears or swedish fish, and Gerber fruit juice snacks.. is that stuff allowed? I was worried they might read "juice snacks" and say no, LOL.. but to be safe, I can just put them in a baggie anyway!

Wow.. great info, everyone, thanks!

Only medicines that are liquids or gels need special treatment.

Cheerios are fine.

Gummy's, swedish fish, etc should be fine. There's always a slight chance a TSA screener will make up a rule on the spot saying they aren't. The chance is small; people bring them through all the time, but do be prepared. Putting them in the baggies isn't going to do any good unless they are in original packaging stating they are <3oz. If they are, throw them in.
