RE: airline security regulations
Am I safe in assuming that deoderants that read "solid" on the description are NOT considered liquid and don't go in the ziploc bag?
How about Burts Bees Lipbalm?
Does security berate or lecture you if you err on the side of caution and put something in the ziploc that is not considered a solid?

I would consider both of those solids. And no, you're not going to get berated, chastised, or yelled at if you put a solid "accidently" in your 3-1-1 bag.

OK good. Whew!
I'm packing toiletries over 3wks ahead of time....for the entire family of 5..... that's how nervous I am about getting it all right!

If the substance holds its shape at room temperature outside of its container then it is a solid. Your examples: solids. Liquids: toothpaste, shampoo, ...

I've never had security make any comments about any solids that might have ended up in the 3-1-1 bag. I know I've had chapstick in the 3-1-1 bag just so I knew where it was and they never said anything. I think you're more likely to get a lecture if you leave something that is a liquid out of the 3-1-1 bag.

That makes sense. Thanks.

That rule only applies to carry on luggage right? I plan to pack full size toiletries in my checked luggage because I'd need 12 3.4oz containers of conditioner to get me through a week!!

The 3-1-1 bag is only for liquids in carry-on luggage.

Some passengers seem to think that all liquids need to go in the 3-1-1 bag and cannot go into checked bags. They are mistaken.

The 3-1-1 bag is useful for sunscreen and anything else that you must have on arrival (on on the first day if your airline delays your bags).

When putting any liquids in checked baggage, it's good to put the containers into Ziploc bags in case they leak due to pressure changes or being jostled.

I always have a small solid deodorant in my 3-1-1 bag so that all of my 'emergency' toiletries are together. No one has ever said a word.
