Is there any reason why at the time I set up my initial online DVC account I should not link it to MDE account?

Not that I know of. All of your logins and passwords should be the same to reduce some of the problems that you may have read about.

We've linked everything, MDE, DVC, Castaway Club. It makes things much easier.

Linking your DVC account to your MDE Account (aka Disney Account) will allow you to purchase annual passes and special event (MNSSHP, MVMCP) tickets on-line at member pricing (when available) and receive any available member discount on purchases made using the Shop Disney Parks mobile app.
