Linking MDE before or after making reservation? (Having trouble)

We are talking friends with us on our next vacation and it is almost time to book our resort!!! I don't remember however if we should link out My Disney Experience accounts before or after I make the reservation; could someone please let me know which will work better?

When I go to link my ressie on MDE, it always asks me to link the individuals that I'm friends / family with to the people I have in the reservation. For that reason, I think it would be better to have your friends / family linked before you link your reservation.

For trouble linking, call Disney IT. They've always been very helpful - last week straightened out issues with DSIL's MDE "identity" that kept me from linking him to next January ressie.
