Linked reservations and 180+ ADRs

I have a reservation on points (for the beginning) and cash (for the end). The reservations are linked, but I notice that when I enter my reservation on the disney dining site, it only "associates" the first part of the reservation.

My window for 180+ ADR is coming up in a little. Will I only be able to book the first part of the reservation on the first day and then the second part on the day my cash reservation statrts? Do you think if I call instead of try on line, I'll have better luck?

That was my experience last year. I was told that linking a reservation, does not make it like a single reservation. As a matter of fact, after the explanation that I received, I am uncertain as to the advantage of linking reservations
