Limit on smilies? Anyone else, have I missed something?

What the???
Guess you're not crazy after all...;)

Wow first the dot, now the smiley. ;) I know of a few posters who will be very confused with access to only two smileys.

ok I wanna try this out!

 :)

yeah only worked with 2...how interesting!

I got the same message when I had some bouncing smilies after my countdown clock. They had been there for quite awhile but when I went to change something in my signature, I had to get rid of them. Wouldn't other things take up more space?? Oh well, go figure!

I also got that and I only had one :D so I just deleted that smile and it went through. I wonder what is happening :D

Ok, I've got to try something too. :)

Whew! I was worried that I wouldn't be able to post any smilies because I have two pics in my signature. I'd just remove the pics but I've promised myself that I was going to leave those two pics the same until Titus comes home.

Only two smilies per post?? Come on.... sheesh.

If they can check that, they can check that the sum total of the *size* all images in a post doesn't exceed a certain amount. :p That would make much more sense than limiting to just 2 smilies. :p

So this would be acceptable:

large-smiley-004.gif
large-smiley-030.gif

...but three :-) :-) :-) wouldn't be?

Does that make sense?

I believe it has to do with # of images rather than size, although seeing those huge ones would drive me batty after awhile. :) :p

I posted an update on why Pete turned off smilies on the sticky post at the top of the CB. Some may not understand...

And yes, Steve - it does make sense. Count the number of smilies on an old post to see how many people actually use. Then look how often someone posts the big smilies you just put in. It's all a matter of quantity.

I read you explanation and yes, I understood it -- I don't, however, see that the benefit will necessarily be worth the inevitable grief this will cause. But that's just me, I guess.

Nope, not just you.

Think of it this way - you don't really have a choice. People will just stop using the smileys and use :-) and such instead. I don't like the DIS meets board, but I *have* to use it. That's how it is with board policies.

Not to be the devils advocate here, but would you rather have faster boards, or see 50 smilies in a post?

I'm disappointed that I can't post picture threads anymore. That will be a bummer, but I can link people to my web pages if they really really want to see them.

The DIS boards are not a democracy. :)

You're absolutely correct. :)

P.S. Good luck on that Webmaster interview -- you're a shoo-in.

I wish I could put a whole long line of laughing smilies here. You couldn't be further from my feelings on this. I'm just tired of trying to fight the fight, when it never comes to anything. Tired of trying to make suggestions when they fall on ears that don't listen (or can't).

I wish I could say I could afford to run a board that wouldn't have limits. But I can't.

A bandwidth tutorial:

http://thewhir.com/find/web-hosts/articles/bandwidth.cfm

FYI - if your smilies are 600K, you need to reduce them in quality.

The one on this site :D is 15 X 15 pixels and 372 bytes. It is stored on the disboards server, therefore it eats up disboards bandwidth.

Taking the same smiley and reducing it from 32 color to 16 color:

smile.gif

makes it now only 170 bytes, and it looks a little different, but still gets the effect across. It's also stored on MY website, meaning that it pulls NO bandwidth from disboards, therefore costing Pete nothing.

If people want to post 400 pictures in a post, as long as they are stored somewhere besides disboards, it shouldn't matter. It's when you store your pics on Pete's site that it costs him big bucks.

Never had this happen to me but then I don't put smilies in my replies!!!

Jipsy -- the "bandwidth" issue is explained (finally) by Jeff on the second page of Pete's post at the top of the board.

My problem with this is that it makes no sense. BTW: having 2 instances of :) or 25 doesn't take any more bandwidth -- the computer only downloads that smily *once* then the client repeats it 25 more times. Trying to save "bandwidth" by limiting smilies is, IMHO, over the top and just another of the micromanaging issues that are making the DIS so frustrating.

Instead of restricting people to posting only, oh, 150K per post (which almost every image that has ever been posted here can be resized/optimized to if the user learns how to do it properly), they're restricting people to 2 images?

So the person who wants to say :) x 5 (which is a total of 372 bytes, not even 1k, since it only downloads the image once) gets restricted to just twice, but the person who posts two images that are 500x375 and 300k each -- the *real* "bandwidth" problems -- have no restriction to those two images? You're punishing the person who just wants to post smilies.

It'd make more sense to have a function that sums up the total bytes each image uses and if it's over, oh, 150k total per the post, require them to remove something or optimize. *That* would make a real impact on the board speed.
