My husband (and kids) have NEVER seen lightning bugs, never lived in a part of the country where they have them. My husband has gone as far as to believe they don't exist! He said he heard insecticides have destroyed them. I haven't seen them since I was in Southern Illinois 20 years ago...so...

Here's my question - Are there still fireflies? Are there lightning bugs in the Orlando area? Our vacation there may be the only time we're far enough south and the only chance I have to prove these critters are real!

Anyone?

I do not know about Orlando but you can assure your husband that they still exist and I enjoy watching them from my back porch often.

LOL!! That's funny. I don't know about Orlando, but we have them in Maryland! I haven't seen one yet this summer though.

I have no clue about Orlando, but we have them all the time in Oklahoma.

We have them in New Jersey. I see them every night when I walk the dog and had one in my garage yesterday.

Don't know about Orlando - but last night here in PA, DD was catching them - had her lantern full!!!!

You guys are invited to our backyard! Every night we have them out there! They look like little, miniature fireworks going off! I just love them! :bounce:

I had never seen a lightning bug in my life until I went back to New Jersey with my husband for the first time SOOO long ago!

I was standing outside and I started to see all these flashes of light. I started yelling for my husband because I thought I was getting a migraine!

It's still a running joke in our family!

We have them in NH, too! Every night, the wetlands in front of my house and the woods in back of my house light up. It's so much fun to watch it.

One of the best parts of summer in NJ is the lightening bugs. Kids have a blast catching them and releasing them.

we have them in Indianapolis and tennesse. My daughter brought one home for tennesse and when she woke up it was gone. i actualy released it at night and told her Tinkerbelle came to get her cause its part of her family that comes to check on the boys and girls comming to visit her.

We had one trapped between a double pane of glass in one of our back windows yesterday. I felt so bad that I took the thing apart to let it go.

A few nights before that, we had one (the same one?) crawling up the glass then roaming aroung on the grass. I told my DH it looked like it was sending morse code. :p

Fun bugs to watch!

Got a ton of them here. You're welcome to them if you want. I've even got them in the house cause they fly in when the kids open the door.:)

Beautiful little things

We still have lots of them here in NE Ohio. When my cousin from SoCalifornia was visiting with her kids a few years ago, they were fascinated by the fireflys. It never even crossed my mind that they were a regional phenomenon.

Got tons of them her in WV. My yard is full of them at dusk. Actually, I saw the first one in April-had never seen them that early before. Love to watch them flash around.

Yes, there are lightening bugs out there... we get tons in the summer. The last couple of days my girls have stayed up late to catch them!!! :)

OH MY GOSH!

I didn't know the lightening bugs are not everywhere! I think I just realized that I should see more of this country! I have lived in Connecticut all my life and I would hate to have a summer that I couldn't go out and catch some of those bugs! I have seen a few this year but they usually don't really come out until July 4th weekend.
