I am looking at buying some lighting for indoor photos and am not sure what to get first. I want to be able to take better gymnasium pics and some for home portraits. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:)

Thanks
sherri

Right now I have a SB-600, SB-800 and a small softbox and it works great for me. Do you want speed lights or Hot Lights?
Also take a look at this site:
http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/

Used a homemade backdrop and a SB-600 firing overheard through a small soft box, and a SB-800 used for fill and as master flash.

There was some inexpensive umbrellas with flash mounts that can go on a tripod on eBay that looked promising also. I know they are not Alien Bees quality but they are inexpensive and you can recycle those old flash units.

Im sorry, Im so lighting challenged that I dont understand hot lights or speed lights difference. I have a canon rebel XTI and need to know what to get that will work with that camera. Thanks for your help.

A speedlight is a flash and a hot light is a light bulb basically.

Here is a home studio a fellow canon person did showing hot lights

the one problem with usiing worklights, is the warning that is on them..

I bought a set for work purposes, and there is a very clear warning not to aim them at people, because it is hazardous to skin,, and if I recall correctly it mentioned skin cancer, not a risk I'm willing to take with other people's health..
