I want to put Pergo laminate wood flooring in my house. I have light oak cabinets and cannot match the colors. Should I put a lighter or darker color of wood on my floors? Which looks better?

I have cider colored maple cabinets and put in a light cherry Pergo flooring. But after the fact, I read in a lot of kitchen design books that its better to go with a contrast to your cabinets, so therefore I would say a darker floor is a better choice. I wish I would have done so after the fact!

I just heard the same info. Actually, the lady told me she was told her countertops were a dark granite so her flooring should be lighter wood to contrast.

Heidi: I would go with the darker flooring with the lighter cabinets.

If you had dark cabinets, I would go with lighter flooring.

I just ordered new laminate wood flooring for my kitchen. I have natural maple kitchen cabinets (I believe the were called Wheat) and I went with Brazilian cherry wood planks ... I can't wait for it to be installed. I looked at tons of wood laminate flooring and we ended up going with Bruce. The style we selected looks incredibly realistic (or at least I think so ! )

Check out the Bruce site ... it has a really neat design feature where you can choose different flooring options in different settings to get an idea of what the room will look like ...

That's the floor we chose.

It's fun to play with the different options ! Enjoy :thumbsup2

I'll go against the crowd and vote for lighter. We have laminate in one room of our house, and it is kind of a medium oak-lookng finish. I wish I had gone with more of a light maple or unstained-oak look. The lighter colored ones look way more like real wood to me. The darker the laminate, the more it looks like fake wood - kinda like that wall paneling from the '70s.

I wouldn't go dark either, but darker than the light shade she has.

Thank you guys for your help. I was thinking darker and my BIL told me to go darker, but I wasn't sure.

Thank you, that is a great site!!!

I have both darker and lighter (natural) Pergo flooring in my house. I am ripping out the darker and putting the natural everywhere. The reason being that the darker looks dirty all the time. I have tried every cleaner made and it looks like it has a film on it. The only time it shines is if I hand polish it with Pledge which is not recommended, but is highly entertaining to watch the dogs walk on. :rotfl:

The natural only shows dirst when you actually track on it, otherwise it looks great and more like wood.
