Lightening at the fort

We just got back from the fort for a short weekend stay and Friday night there was a really bad storm and it hit the cable at the fort and fried both the tv's in our motorhome. We were in site 616 and I talked to a couple of other people and they had there tv's hit also. I'm going to go and try and buy somekind of surge protector for the coax cable for our motorhome. Maintance was working for almost 24 hrs to fix the cable. They had to run new cable all over the place and they were having to hang it above the road in our loop for now. We always use a surge protector for our motorhome but never thought about one for the coax for the tv. Well lesson learned.

We were there yesterday (riding our bikes around) and saw water standing everywhere!!! I don't believe I've ever seen so much water at the Fort --even after the 2004 hurricanes, and many, many tropical storms over the years!! Sites in 300, 400, 500 were surrounded by water!! Naturally, the original pet loops (1600-1900) were a total swamp, but that's normal for back there.

Toby (CM at Meadow Trading Post) said the power went out at Meadow & T.E. for a brief period of time. She was working the pin-trading booth outside the Hoop-Dee-Doo, and told me with the first "CRACK" of lightning she was doing the Hoop-Dee-POO!!! She said that the pin trading booth had never been shut down and evacuated faster than she did it!!

We live 30 miles west of the Fort & had the clouds & lightning, but no rain. That's Florida for ya!!

Wow, sorry to hear this. We just bought a new TV and I was just talking with a co-worker this morning about getting a surge protector for the coax.

we watched the lightning hit the rods on top of meadows friday night from 1021, not something i would want to see again

I was curious to know how you fared with insurance and if there was anything else that came up from the strike. My father works on sports fishing boats and does a lot of lightning strike work and I know other things can creep up afterwards. ...just a concerned fellow DIS'er.

Well, I was able to get my dealer to replace the TV at no cost to me. So that was really great. I have not used the motor home since the strike so I haven't noticed any other problems yet. We will be at the fort in 2 weeks so I have to wait untill then to see if anything else pops up.

Yet another reason for us NOT to get a tv in our rv. The kids and dh keep begging for one, but I say NO way. BUT, if they ever do talk me into it, I will definitley look into a surge protector. Thx for the heads up.

We have been at the fort when they have had some seriuos lightning storms. They scare the @#$% out of me. I swear it feels like it is going to hit you.
