Light in the cabin

I am reading as much as I can in prep for our first Disney cruise.

In the confessions thread I see multi references to having a key card in something for light. Do I need to bring something for this? Can someone explain and elaborate?!?

Thank you!

On the Fantasy & Dream, there's a slot near the door (light switch) that requires a card to toggle the switch for the lights to turn on. The card size necessary for the slot is the typical credit card size. You can bring a random card to use in there, or use your KTTW card (just remember to remove it when you leave the room, or you won't have your key to get back into the room).

If you are staying in the Cocoa Beach area the day before embarkation, your hotel key card will do nicely. Or even a folded-up piece of paper will suffice.

We will usually use a hotel key from our pre cruise stay, or even a AAA card or CVS card, anything you don't need with you on the cruise to prevent forgetting to take you key. ;) Although obviously, leaving a credit card out wouldn't be a good idea, but anything not of value will work.

I think if you don't leave a card in the slot, the air conditioning goes out too. We are always too hot so we keep it as cold as possible all day. We always leave something in the slot to keep the air on.

I use that handy Privacy Please sign hanging on the door. It's split at the top, so half of it fits in the slot perfectly upside down. I just ask the stateroom host to leave it there and I make sure to turn off everything as I leave the room.

Only the lights and the tv are controlled by the key card.
The AC and anything you leave plugged in (charging a phone/camera) will work.
Many people don't think the AC works because it just more difficult to keep the ship cool when in port. The doors are open so people can get on and off the ship and many people keep their veranda doors open and many times they are loading things on and off the ship.

No, the AC stays on. We brought an old WDW KTTW card and put that in while we were in the room. When we left the room, we took it out and put it into the closet (I think there was a shelf right inside near the door) and would put it back in as soon as we re-entered. Room remained a consistent temperature. I was always afraid of putting my own card in and leaving it so we preferred to use a different one but saw no reason to leave it in while we were out.

If you make a card, include a magnet to stick it on the door when you leave. We've got several as fish extender gifts and they are so clever and simple as a gift.

You can actually stick it to the wall immediately above the slot (the walls are metal also). That way it's more easily accessible then reaching around the door when you come in.

I'm surprised nobody has ever created a custom run of hotel key cards designed just for the lights in the room to give away as FE. Have something clever printed up with one of the companies that has a 50-card minimum and put them in the FE. I can picture a light bulb graphic where the bulb is Mickey-shaped. If I ever bothered with FE I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'd even take the time to add a little bit of magnetic tape to the top edge so people can stick it to their wall. At less than $2 each (usually much less) it would be something useful and unique.

People have been making their own to give in FE exchanges:

Yep..the link I posted above has them in packages for FE gifts. She also has other disney related items and she can customize. Fast delivery too!

It's not necessary to remove the card completely. Lifting it 3/4 inch will suffice.
Upon return, push down.

We use old useless gift cards.

At first we thought this mechanism would be irritating. We were wrong.
With kids leaving all the lights and TVs on, it was an extremely convenient way to turn everything off. The only minor inconvenience, TV defaults back to some ship channel.

I didn't notice that they were all from that place. I thought indvidual people had made them. But they're definitely available commercially.

I make my own light cards. I use useless cards, labels, my computer and color printer. I add magnets to the back.
