Light cards for Fantasy???

So I've found some amazing, creative DCL related products on Etsy lately and one in particular has me fascinated...light cards for your cabin? Apparently you use them while in the room, then stick (magnetic) them to your wall when you leave the room. Anyone used these and found them helpful??? Very curious!!!

Why buy them? Just use a card you already have. Any credit card sized card will do. Just stick a magnet on it and you're good to go.

Oh, sorry for not being clear. Wasn't necessarily going to buy them but had never thought about the idea of that and wondered if they're useful? First time on Fantasy and the Wonder didn't have that sort of lighting last time I cruised a few years ago so I was unfamiliar with how it worked?

They have designed the rooms so that when no one is in the room, energy is not wasted by leaving the lights, tv, etc. on. When you enter the room, you place your "key to the world" or a light card in the slot and your power is engaged. When you leave, you remove your card and the power goes off until you return and place a card again. Great way to conserve energy!

Love this idea! I just made a card using my laminating machine and an old magnet. The advantage is that you can open your door with your card still in your lanyard but then have to fish it out for the lights. Then, you have to remember to grab it before walking out! Mostly, on one occasion we were in the room and DH had his key in the slot. He decided to go out and grabbed his key leaving the rest of us in the dark! This card idea is perfect! I do plan on taking it out and sticking it to the wall when we go out to conserve power but I'm thrilled I can leave my key card in my lanyard!!

We just used old expired Kohls discount cards (made of cardboard)-didn't really care what it looked like since its only purpose is to keep the lights on when you're in the room. We didn't want to put our KTTW card in there and possibly forget to take it with us. Wouldn't pay for one since you can use any old store/merchandise credit or a cardboard card.

I also plan to use an old gift card or store card. I never thought of the magnet but I plan to be one and stick to to the card. Great idea. Thanks

Oh....now the card makes more sense! Thanks for the info. I'll definitely make one.

Our room steward showed us that you can use your do not disturb door hanger for this as well.

Myself, and another FE participant in our group, gave light cards as part of our FE gift.

My TA gave us one of her business cards that she had turned into a "light card" by using heavy stock cardboard and the appropriate size. It came with all our travel documents and was handy when I rebooked onboard (I had her info to give to Disney). We didn't waste electricity because we would just pull the card up about an inch out of the slot to deactivate the lights when we left the room.

We too use a "light card" - in fact, Scott even did a blog post on the Disney Cruise Line blog on it a while back. We took a DCL gift card and stuck a magnet to the back of it. Then, on our way out of the room, we take the card out of the slot and stuck it to the wall. Why did this come about you ask? Why not use the KTTW card? Well, we did, until one day, I'm in the shower & Scott grabs the card and heads to the laundry room, leaving me in the dark. Not cool. So, with the "light card," it's always right there, stuck to the wall above the slot when not in use and our KTTW cards never have to leave our lanyards. And, we don't have to carry another card around with us and risk leaving it in the slot accidentally, and having the stateroom host removing it.

ETA: We typically use the Do Not Disturb card while we are in the room, rendering it useless as a card for the lights......

We read about this on Scott's blog - and gave it a try on our June 1 Fantasy cruise. It worked like a charm! Just used an old Disney gift card and some magnet tape. So handy to stick it on the wall above the "switch" on our way out the door. We didn't have to take our KTTW cards out of our lanyards unless we were making a purchase. BTW - we were concierge on deck 12, so if anyone is wondering (like I was) - the wall issue is not like the door issue in regards to magnetism. The magnet worked perfectly! This makes me wonder if business-card sized magnets (which are sometimes handed out by contractors, etc. would work just as well - we've got a few of those on our fridge...)

Stewards tend to remove them if they find that they have been left. We left one by accident and he places it in the shelf for us. We rarely leave them in, unless we are making a quick trip up to the drink station or something.

I think people are bypassing using the KTTW card mostly. Using another card prevents someone leaving theirs in the room or, like a PP said, leaving you in the dark on accident.

Didn't happen to have extra cards around the house right now, so I stopped by the Disney Store today and they very nicely gave me two Mickey gift cards for free. Adding my own magnet and I'm all set with a light card, Disney style!

I would say the opposite - Most cruisers do not bypass them as they think their actual KTTW is needed to operate the light switch.

We know better and get creative. Remember we are a small minority.
