Hi, We just moved from OR to ME and my dad has a home out here with a boat. He really wants to take my kids on the boat a few times with him this summer and I am supposed to be looking for life jacket for all 4 of them. Does anyone know where I can get a good deal on life jackets? Like I said, I need 4 and the ones I have found so far are expensive. I also don't know what a good brand is?? Obviously, I want them to work well as they will be out in the middle of the ocean with them! So affordable, but excellent quality. Does such a thing exist? Also my youngest DD just turned 5 but only weighs 28lbs (she is tiny...I know) so I need a smaller type for her. Thanks for any help anyone can give me!!

Welcome to Maine!

Definately check Walmart/etc. If you look on the inside back of the life jacket, it should have a US Coast Guard approval, say what type {you want II} and will tell you the weight it is for.

For a small, thin child (which is sounds like your DD is), I'd get one with a crotch strap. I think I'd given up the head-float thing {whatever it's name is!} by 5. A baby I'd worry more, but IMO a 5yo is fine without. The tradeoff is it is awfullly cumbersome and you want a kid to be as-comfortable as possible because they need to be wearing it anytime on the dock or in the boat. (I'd even have them try on a couple possible appropriate styles to see which they think feels better.)

Have fun!

I can't say wear to look, but I 2nd the other poster who said to check for the tag that says US Coast Guard approved.

If you have a Dick's Sporting Goods they were on sale buy one get one free this week in VA. I bought 2 for $40. They seemed to be good quality.

woot.com has them today (sunday June 17th), infant to adult sizes for less than $10 each.

I looked into these because the price was phenomenal. They are not coast guard approved. Would be fine for keeping bouyancy around the pool and what not but probably would not stand up in a situation where they might need to save lives. Even less so in ocean conditions.

Thanks for letting me know about the coast guard approval. That is great. I am going to take them all to Walmart and have them try them on. And thanks for welcoming me to Maine! It has been great here. We really love it. :)

We bought ours at Target, they had a full display/variety and different sizes.

Enjoy that boat!

I found decent (actually even the best) prices at cabellas.com last year. I was surprised to find such prices on a brand name like that. There's also a Cabella's in Scarborough? if you are near there.
And bonus was they have 'comfort' ones that have mesh at the shoulders so they aren't as annoying to wear.

I recently saw lifejackets at Costco as well.

YES!! I am only 20 min from there! That is great. Maybe I will check out both places then. Cabella's first then head over to Walmart. Thanks!

I just looked at Cabella online and if you buy 4 life jackets you get an extra $2 off each one!!! Thank you so much. They are only 19 a piece there. Going to call today when they open and make sure they have the same deal in the store if not I will go down have the kids try them on at the store to check size and then order them online. Thanks again!

DD21 got DGS2 a new one this past week at Walmart. It looks like a frog and straps around him and around his arms. He loves it! It doesn't choke him like a regular one but keeps him up right.

You're very welcome!

If Cabellas does not have the sale in the store let the employee know it is on sale their website. They will give you that price.

I did that with a fleece jacket DS13 wanted. They honored the online price and it was way cheaper than the store price. I had even printed out the page to show it to them.

Good luck!
