Life’s too short...to never sleep in a treehouse! 8/27 TR is up! Link in siggie

Hi Cynthia Vent away!!! Bt I dohave a ??? What is Hi Cap????

Doh!

Sorry Rosie. Hi-cap is short for Highly Capable. The politically correct way to name a gifted program these days in some parts. In 1st grade all the kids in our district are tested. The top 10% go on for additional testing. Top 2 or 3% from there qualify for the program. It is a self contained school that is located in two of our regular elementary schools, one for each side of our district. They mix with the regular school for band/music and PE (and lunch and recess of course) and some field trips but otherwise it is fully contained versus some programs where they pull the gifted kids out for an hour or 2 each day on certain days.

In concept the kids are basically doing the same curriculum as the mainstream school, just one grade ahead of their actual grade but in reality they can go to whatever level they are capable of as long as they are meeting that one grade up levels requirements, they really individualize it to each child. Eric started in it last year and overall it has been WONDERFUL for him. It is a much heavier workload than the regular curriculum as they supplement it a lot (varies by teacher) but he just loves it.

Although I wasn't feeling quite the love on our way to WDW last Feb when he had to write and turn in a 10 page paper that he'd not finished (his 2nd grade typing skills left much to be desired). Or however long it was....I'm trying to erase the memories of that flight and working on it with him the entire time and having to email it the minute we landed!

lol.

Does that help?

Sorry!

I'm glad I can be a decoy for your reveal.:thumbsup2

Sounds like things are starting to shape up for your CA trip. Nice that you can save a bit of money as well with the kids fly free.

Even with Bob Iger saying that they will begin scaling back discounts as the year progresses, free dining has been a staple for several years even before the economy tanked. I would imagine it's coming back.

Guess what I just got in the mail???!!

Thanks, Cynthia, for that LOVELY Christmas card you sent!! I LOVED it- and it's safely tucked into my Hidden Magic book that I get out A LOT; I'll be seeing your pretty faces often

That video is awesome! It's neat how it takes a little while before you figure out that it is being played backwards. The youth group from our church made a video to basically ask for stuff to be donated for their new youth room (couches, games, etc.) and it is hilarious. It's sped up a little bit so it looks like a keystone cops kind of thing and the plot is them trying to figure out schemes to get stuff (going to the pastor who pulls out his empty pants pockets, etc. etc.).

Good to see your plans coming together. Your "reveal" jig saw puzzle sounds like it'll be a great moment.

That's one of my favorite lip dubs! My school actually made one back in November, we tried to be the first in the country but got beat out by a school in Texas :confused3 So at least we can claim number 2 and first in New England!

It came out okay, I can think of a few that most definitely beat ours, we really should've done it more times but we were losing daylight and people wanted to go home...I've linked it if you're interested; myself, I'm the girl in the yellow and white striped sweater with the magenta scarf thing :goodvibes It also gives you a nice little tour of my beautiful Boston!!!

Sorry about all the school drama - I really hate when there's drama - it really puts a strain on everything!

Your secret reveal plans sound great - I can't wait to hear what the boys think! :thumbsup2

Now that I've totally bashed my own school district!

Something FUN!

I'd like to share something our rival HS came up with.

The E's will actually go to the school that this video is in response to. Apparently their future school put one out there as a challenge to this school to see who had the better lip dub video.

These guys blew them away! It's gotten some national press so you may have seen it elsewhere!

That was so cool! I don't get how they did it, do you? I mean, you can tell that its being played backwords, but how is it that the lip synching still lines up? Wouldn't their mouths be saying the words backwards, too (If that makes any sense):confused3

Our final total for 4 nights at the Crowne Plaza, car and flights was $1187!

I LOVE the kids fly free deal!!!

That is an awesome deal!

........
On the plane they will each get a puzzle, (thank you Jackie!) the puzzles will be different and will show all the things we are going to do. I found out the airline tray dimensions and a site that will make something that will fit (8x10) without it being too easy or hard (165 pieces each).

Custom puzzles, how cool! Do our kids ever really realize the effort we go to...

.........
I’ve crunched and recrunched all the numbers in anticipation of possibly having to move our dates. Bottom line is we REALLY need Free Dining to come out as that would chop off another $650 for us (though adds a little to Sandie’s portion). Great as the 40% off room promo is, FD beats it for us.

Wait, I might be getting confused - but aren't you staying at Yacht Club now? I would have thought that 40% off of that would be much better than free dining! Whenever I've done estimates, it always worked out that free dining was definitely better at the values (dining costs more than the room!), about equal to a 40% off at the mods, and less than a 40% discount at the deluxes. Have I been figuring wrong?

Sure does!! I know it as accelarated program !! Kyle was reccommended for it but he did Not want to go as it meant changing schools and the school that had it did not have Latckey which was also a major problem!!

Congrats on booking it! I can't wait to see those pics!

Oh, and Facebook? I use FB, but I do not have parents of students as friends, nor do I keep anything on there that could potentially cause problems with my job.

Love the plan! Enjoy your visit with Friend Jordan. Hmm....I'm seeing an action figure here.

that video is awesome. I couldn't watch it all my pastor just drove in:rolleyes1
My pastor's son is IN the video! He's actually part of the class that produced it and is in the credits

:goodvibes

I'm glad I can be a decoy for your reveal.:thumbsup2

I sure hope so! From a crowd standpoint I'd rather go earlier but it's a decent chunk of change. No clue if it will make a difference in flights depending on the dates, they seemed to run pretty consistent price wise over the summer.

You're a great decoy!

I'm off to go check it out!

Sorry about all the school drama - I really hate when there's drama - it really puts a strain on everything!

Drama is a drag. The teacher that resigned is apparently stopping by over the next to weeks to say goodbye and I'm glad to hear that, it will give Eric some closure. Latest update is they can't even start interviews until the 12th and there are 37 candidates so I'd imagine the reality of someone starting on the 19th is well...the principal is smoking crack!

That was so cool! I don't get how they did it, do you? I mean, you can tell that its being played backwords, but how is it that the lip synching still lines up? Wouldn't their mouths be saying the words backwards, too (If that makes any sense):confused3

There is actually another youtube video that talks through the making of it!

We are staying at the YC. As a general rule, 40% off at a deluxe is a better deal the FD. But it really depends on how many people you have and of those, how many are Disney adults on the dining plan. For us on this trip, because we are paying for one room and Sandie and Paul another (but splitting Doug's costs) and we have 6 Disney Adults, for us the Free Dining is a better deal. If we were paying for both rooms ourselves, the 40% off would be better. For Sandie's portion the 40% off is a better deal by a couple of hundred so we will offset that to make it fair, it still comes out better for us. So it just depends on the ages of your kids.

Eric will technically be 9 but it is SO close to his 10th birthday and he can't stand the kids menu so I really want him to be an adult on the plan. Even if I had him as a child, FD works out better.

If it were just the 6 of us and we wanted to stay deluxe (Like at a Treehouse!) I am pretty sure that the 40% works out better.

Sure does!! I know it as accelarated program !! Kyle was reccommended for it but he did Not want to go as it meant changing schools and the school that had it did not have Latckey which was also a major problem!!

That's annoying, all our schools have an afterschool care program but they are pricey!

Congrats on booking it! I can't wait to see those pics!

Oh, and Facebook? I use FB, but I do not have parents of students as friends, nor do I keep anything on there that could potentially cause problems with my job.

I'm not friends with any of my kids teachers so the whole thing is a bit odd and clearly I'm not friends with any of those parents so who knows. Still, word travels...

Love the plan! Enjoy your visit with Friend Jordan. Hmm....I'm seeing an action figure here.

OOH! What kind of action figure?

I love the puzzle idea for the plane ride. This sounds like it's going to be a great surprise.

And congrats on saving some money on the HRH rooms. It may not seem like much, but every little bit sure does help. :goodvibes

So, I was drawn like a moth to a flame over the whole teacher situation for a couple of reasons -- I am a teacher of gifted students (we're still calling them that in Georgia ), a parent of gifted students, and a Southerner ;). I do have to agree with you that parents of hi-cap students can be the WORST helicopters in the parenting skies, but I also have to say that I have been very fortunate that most of my parents are the sweetest, most supportive parents I have ever dealt with in education (I have been teaching for ten years and teaching gifted exclusively for four years). Those that "try" to tell me how to teach or question my teaching methods usually get their ears filled with all the research behind why I do what I do and my credentials. ;) In Georgia, it is a requirement for teachers of gifted students to have a gifted endorsement on their teaching certificates. As for people looking down on Southerners because of their accent, I won't go there this morning except to say that as long as said Southerner isn't using "ain't" or not making their subjects and verbs agree, there shouldn't be any assumptions made about their intelligence.

Sorry to hear about all of the drama though -- that makes it so hard on the students when there isn't stability :(.

On to happier news, I am just tickled that you are using the puzzle idea!!! I can't wait to see how they turn out! I also love that Jordan has been roped in as the "friend." :lmao:

Every little bit does! We'll just keep whittling away if we can! We did decide last night that we will use our give a day vouchers for DCA instead of the fast passes. I'd like the fastpasses so am a little sad but I can't argue with saving $216. It does of course officially kabosh my hopes of DL. However I may upgrade them to 1 day hoppers so we can at least peek in!

Looks like some of my fav's will be closed though for refurb but I'm not positive. (TSI and the Matterhorn!). It will depend on park hours and all that.

I have a lot of catching up to do.

I read quickly about the school drama :scared1:

Hi!

I will be very glad when it's over and can only hope it goes well. Interviews don't start until next week, I hope the caliber of candidates is good, and as importantly, whomever they choose can handle the PITA parents in there!

Thankfully he does have a different teacher for math (his teacher from last year) so there is consistency there.

:scared1:

Well, to be fair, I am making an assumption on the accent. But having lived here most of my life it is not out of the realm of possibility that the combination of no gifted background and short time (relatively) teaching and the accent didn't add up well for some. He did have gifted students in his classes before mind you, however they were pulled out for their gifted programs so I think some saw that as not having relevant experience and went in for the kill.

Personally, I am a huge sucker for a southern accent!

At any rate, I love the fact Georgia requires a gifted endorsement. We were spoiled last year, our previous teacher has been teaching gifted for 20 or more years and actually travels all over the country teaching other teachers on how to teach gifted students (which sounds awkward but my coffee deprived brain can't think of a better way to say it!). She is absolutely amazing. We expected to have her again and Eric's 2 best friends still do but due to the large number of kids that came into the program this year they needed to add another class and Eric was moved to the 3/4 split instead of remaining in the 2/3.

I do think that the combination of the principal and his previous teacher stating so vocally that they were looking for someone with a background in it, and then not choosing one, set the poor guy up to an extent. From day one he was grilled, the poor guy started on curriculum night and was practically attacked by some. It was horrible, like watching a train wreck. He hadn't even seen the curriculum yet to be able to speak to it. He made some remarks that night that didn't sit well with some such as he wasn't big on homework and "aren't all kids gifted?" when questioned about his experience.

At any rate, who really knows what happened, it just saddens me all around and I do think we lost a teacher that could have been very very special. He did some truly wonderful things with the kids while he was here. Different, but memorable. Was it as strictly academic focused as some might of wanted? No. But it made my child think, and feel, and really unleashed his writing in an amazing way. He will be missed.

The majority of the parents are amazing and a more supportive group of their kids, you will not find. It is an interesting change to witness, where in the "regular" classroom you have some very involved, some not at all and some downright neglectful to go to 100% over involved! Most in very very good ways.

It is sad when a vocal minority ruins it for everyone else. I am thankful to have one good friend of my own who is a parent in the class, it helps keep us both sane during all of this. She actually thinks he was asked to leave but who knows. It doesn't much matter, none of it speaks well, either of his character (in standing up for himself), or of our principal's (in caving to certain parents), and of some of the parents (who may now feel like they "won").

ICK!

Then again, maybe there really is a family illness in Alabama. We are focusing on the positive, the time Eric had with him was a gift and he can take away some wonderful things from it. We are learning that sometimes special people are only in your life for a short time and so we need to treasure each moment.

I bow down to you :worship::worship::worship:for being a teacher and putting up with parents!

Enough of that!

I'm excited about the puzzle. And making the little journal/workbooks. Shutterfly's one is too big for the tray but there are quite a few puzzle makers out there apparently so it should be a lot of fun!

Of course I'm eroding some of the savings of our give a day ticket vouchers with my reveal expenses :rotfl: but that's ok. It will be fun!

You are so cute Elphie!

Is that last shot one of the school buildings? It's so pretty.

Very fun, thanks for linking, I  Boston! Need to get back there one of these days.

Your story about the teacher at your son's school does not surprise me at all. I teach in a selective K-12 gifted school and there's always drama. I used to associate it with NYC parents, but apparently it isn't limited to NYC.
It amazes me that in 2010 people are still judging people by things like regional accents. Amazing.

I hope they find a fantastic teacher to replace him and the drama stops.

Puzzles!!! YAY! Very cool idea! Oh I must say I agree that we do bend over backwards to make these surprises "magical" and fun! MY guys would probably lose interest in the puzzle or would fight about it or lose a piece, etc. etc. etc. :rotfl:

So my 10 cents on the school issue...

I work with a GT program, but at the HS level. Previously a teacher, now I run a program. I see all the same things you all are describing -- there is a lot of pressure to perform, so that comes with its own problems unfortunately. GT kids are bright, but that doesnt mean they have the facility to navigate situations, experiences, or emotions that are new to them. Sometimes teachers and parents forget that 9th graders are still children, and 17 year olds emerging adults. I think it can be more intense at HS too, because the future is eminent. Especially when you start working with children and families who believe there is no future for their student if he or she isnt accepted to Yale...:sad2: Hoping not to offend. Just making observations.

Yay on saving $$$!!!

And I must have missed something. What airline are you using that you got kids fly free?

You're going to LOVE The Getty Museum. It's amazingly beautiful.
I hope you get to try Sushi Roku. They serve the best crunchy spicy tuna rolls.

Love the puzzles idea. If you ever want to make your own puzzles or games, check out this website: http://barebooks.com. They sell tons of blank books, puzzles, and game boards. We use them at school all the time.
