Lien released and bank wants more money....

I always thought that Fifth/Third was a STUPID name for a bank. Reason enough not to do business with them.

Good luck OP.

I agree! :)

Do you have to pay property tax on your car or something?

Not meaning to hijack, but I've never heard of a city taxing a car... is that a state thing? We are probably going to be moving around the country, where do I need to think about this sort of thing?

Definitely look into all of that sort of thing before moving, just so you are prepared.

I was living in VA and I leased a car. Part of the lease was that the dealership would pay the some sort of taxes on the car each year during the 4 year lease, which is how you get the tabs/stickers/whatever your state calls them to show that it's registered and legal and everything.

Then I moved to WA, and expected them to do it...aha, NO. The tax you pay in WA is called something different, and because of the different names, they wouldn't do it. I lost that benefit entirely, because I moved to a place with a different name for the tax that gets you the registration tab/sticker/whatever.

I would have preferred to know/realize/understand this before, but I'd never had a car in my name before, and didn't know that I needed to know it!

That is so strange.
How much are these taxes? Do they go by blue book value or something?
If my car is a $10,000 car, how much would I expect to pay? Are we talking $5/year? hundreds? thousands?

I just paid $1600 car tax which was only 30% of the amount due. A car tax relief provision wrote of 70% of the amount due.

It's not so unusual to have a city tax on cars...and if you move a lot these different taxes are a real pain to keep track of.

OP - good luck. It's a real drag getting phone calls and letters like that when it is not your liability. You just have to develop a thick skin. I used to get all anxious and nervous with my mom's medical bills that got screwed up. I took each contact very personal and felt my integrity was being questioned. Once I had a handle on the mystery - like you do - it just didn't bother me any more.

I think the outrageous part of the OP's story is that they would not bump her up to the next level of authority, at least early on.

This is a new one for me too. I've heard of taxes for new cars but I've never heard of these annual city taxes.

$425 here. Yes, it by the value of the car each year. Don't know if they use the KBB value or some other means. If you owned 2 $10K cars, then double it, etc.

We pay city/county taxes on vehicles AND dogs!! And I TOTALLY agree about the stupid name of Fifth/Third Bank - known locally as the "fraction bank"!!! Isn't Five/thirds actually 1 and 2/3's??

According to Wikipedia -

Fifth Third's unusual name is the result of the June 1, 1908 merger of two banks, The Fifth National Bank and The Third National Bank, to become The Fifth Third National Bank of Cincinnati. The name went through several changes over the years, until on March 24, 1969, the name was changed to Fifth Third Bank.

Instead of spending hours with the issue, write a simple lett4er asking for a description of the debt. Then write a dispute letter if you dispute the debt.

Save time, don't get the letter that well polished.
