Lice ?

A friend found lice 2 Wednesdays ago in her daughter's hair. Very mild case maybe just starting (had lice in October and was a nightmare lot of bugs and eggs) Hasn't found a bug in over a week. Found 1 egg last night no bugs.
I am supposed to babysit for her tomorrow, do you think it is safe for my kids?

the new egg would be a major concern for me,something laid it and don't lice hatch within 7 days? I would say no.

Unfortunately we just went through this in our house not too long ago. I have never experienced this before, what a PAIN! I feel for your friend. Anyway, to answer your question I was told that once you have done an initial treatment you are o.k. to return to school and be around others. Some schools have a nit free policy though. Just make sure the child was treated for the lice. Another piece of advice is that I would not be using any brushes, putting on any hats, laying on any pillows that sort of thing as a sheer precaution. My girlfriend and her kids came over to help me with the situation and her kids were not affected at all but I had already treated mine once. She also used T-Gel dandruff shampoo on her kids for a few days as a deterent just for precaution. Apparently the lice do not like the smell of the neutrogena shampoo (t-gel). Unfortunatly, the initial treatments are no longer working because the lice have become resistant to the treatments. Tell your friend to go buy a big bottle of listerine (original formula, generic is fine) soak the childs hair with it and put a shower cap on for one hour. Rinse it out, this will kill any live bugs, then soak the hair in white vinegar, new shower cap for another hour. This will loosen the glue on the eggs and make them easier to get out. We went thru several lice treatments and couldnt get rid of them. I did the listerine and never saw another one.

My daughter had to get a script from the doctor to get the ones my granddauhter had and it took two treatments.

Teatree oil shampo will act as a deterent, Paul Mitchel makes one with a conditioner as well(I always keep these in the house, 12 years of child care, no lice yet). Dawn dish soap will loosen the "glue" holding the nits to the hair. Metal lice combs work better than plastic. As for going to your friends house, if you are worried, put your hair up if you can, use gel or hairspray and don't let your hair come into contact with things their hair does.
We just had a horrible time at summer camp this year, doing lice checks every week for the last month and finding at least one case of nits or live each time, today was the last day of camp, in about 10 days I'll know if teatree oil and the other prevention methods work.

You don't say where....if it's at your friend's house, I would ONLY go. I would not bring my kids. If you are supposed to watch her kid at your house...I'd be canceling.

I've never had lice, nor has anyone in my family ever had it, so I've never had to live with the treatments, thank goodness. But as an elementary teacher for over 20 years now, I've heard a lot about lice & they seem to be a huge pain & very time consuming to get rid of....a headache I don't need. No, not a chance.

I completely agree my DD had lice on and off for years. We found out her best friends mom did not treat properly as she hated chemicals. We ended up having to use veg oil on her hair with a shower cap and then tea tree oil and then coconut shampoo. You have to get them all out or they hang around forever. Be careful.

Thanks for the respones. Her kids are supposed to come here. I figure I am going to take them to Chuck E Cheese for 2-3 hours
than come home and play outside and the pool. So they are only coming in to use the bathroom.

I went out and bought lice shield shampoo and used it on my girls hair tonight and plan to put olive oil in their hair near the scalp tomorrow along with braids and hairspray too!
