DH is a reader, and is wondering if he should buy a few books to read on the ship or if there's a library or something on the ship.

The Kindle looks more and more tempting with each book he buys...

Many years ago there was a library located where Ocean Quest is now. THen DCL learned that they could book group cruises if they provided a conference room for their use, and the library went out the window.

There is a single book case in the Cove Cafe with books that can be borrowed. The selection is very limited. It seems to have been started by DCL, and furthered by guests who bring items to read and "donate" them to the DCL collection when they have finished with them and don't want to carry them home.

Suggestion--our local "friends of the library" group sells used books for $1 with the proceeds donated to the library. I usually scan the selections before cruising and bring one or two. Then I leave them in the ship's collection for the next guest!

I don't have a kindle, but I do have a SOny digital book reader and I have to say I absolutely LOVE it... its small and compact - I carry it everywhere with me. It's perfect for travel since you can load up a ton of books and they don't take up any room, you can read them on the beach, in the sun, etc...

The books are a bit cheaper then in the store (at least in Canada) especially for newer hardcovers..

I am looking at buying one of the kindle dx (the international ones) for my daughter.. she keeps snagging my book to read

We too visit the library for the book sales to find something to read. Tead them, leave them for the next person in the bookcase and just think of all of space they take up leaves room for the souvenirs!!

I usually donate my finished books to the crew. :thumbsup2 You have to specifically give it to them (your room steward for example) for their library. On the WBPC in '08 we had a bag of books that we all shared during the two week cruise then all the books were given to the crew. The bag (a cloth drawstring bag) was left hanging on the hallway rail outside one of the staterooms, so you could get to it at any time.

Wow...two good ideas! First, sharing books while on the cruise (I'm thinking the trans-Atlantics) and then giving them to the crew!

If your DH is a serious reader, he should bring some books.

The bookcase in Cove Cafe has a very limited selection.

Our favorite onboard library is on the HAL Volendam. This photo shows perhaps one tenth of the library's bookshelves.

A kindle is the way to go! I was very disappointed on my first cruise, but it was my own fault. I arrived unprepared with only one book. I found the selection at the cove very limited. This year I was well prepared!

I just love it. And I can also sync my iphone to my kindle and read books on the phone (don't think I could do it on the ship, but its nice otherwise)

I saw someone reading his Kindle in the coffee shop, looked like a wonderfully relaxing session! I have Kindle on my iPhone, saved me the cost of a Kindle, and took about 10 books with me on the cruise last week. Got reading in in the coffee shop (Cove Cafe), on deck early, and late at night. Nice to have books in your pocket.

How very civilized!

Robyn I have Kindle on my ipod touch and it is my favorite thing ever! I was tempted to get a Kindle but I like to read in the car when Tony is driving and the Kindle is not backlit and the ipod is. I am a huge reader 250-300 a year so the only problem for me is I am a major library user! I tend to get a lof of the free books from the kindle store and then when I go on a trip I will actually suck it up and buy one of two long books 800+ pages. I have heard the Sony reader will work with library ebooks and I want to check that out. I am wiating for Kindle to get this feature. I thought I would hate the small screen but it does not bother me at all! I usually have to take five or six books on a trip now I just slip it in my pocket! Remind me next week and I will show it to you guys!! (OMG I just said next week!! We are going!)

I took my Kindle with me on our cruise in October. I would have been lost without it! I loved the convenience of knowing I had a large selection of books I knew I'd want to read right at my fingertips!

I love love love my kindle!! Got it a couple months ago, and it was the best present I ever bought myself!! I just throw it in my purse, and I've got hundreds of books at my fingertips!
