Anyone have any experience with this college? DD wants to go down and look at it. It is a Christian college, and looks interesting, but is further away than we would like her to go. (she's my youngest of 3 :goodvibes )

Anyone have any pros/cons about this college....I haven't heard of it before she brought home some info from an acquaintance (only someone from high school, whose sister had attended college there.... not really someone she would 'follow' there)
thanks

It was founded by Jerry Falwell and many people continue to couple the college name with Falwell's controversial reputation.

The college does a lot for the community. I know several students there who are all happy with their experiences so far.

I would do your homework very very carefully before allowing your DD to go there.

one of my friends went 2 years there back in the 80,s he loved it and has a nice job today.

A co-workers daughter goes there and she loves it. She's in the nursing program and it's supposed to be great. It is very strict though. Some of the rule remind me of what college was like in the 1950's. Part of me doesn't think that's such a bad thing especially considering the kinds of things I did in college :rolleyes1 :rotfl: but I think a potential student there needs to fully understand what would be expected of him/her.

A friend of mine went there and said she liked it, but said it was very strict. :goodvibes . She might also like Va. Wesleyan here in Va. Beach. It is also a Christian College, but not quite as strict. You still have the supervision level, but mainly on the level of "we are responsible for you" :)

One of our basketball players (would have been a senior this year in College) left our college and went there this year. He's from GA and stopped by (TN) on his way home from VA for his Christmas break.

He absolutely loves it there. The change in this guy has been amazing. I cannot even explain to you how different this guy is and even looks. I have enever seen the love of God pour from someone like it is from him. He had a very positive experience there this past semester. I'd let her look into it.

Meaning ???

I know it is a Christian college with very strict standards, that was founded by Jerry Falwell, and his son Jr. is the Chancellor there now.
She is very much 'into' the Church, going on Sun. mornings, eves, and Wed., eves, and has participated in their youth groups, is a Sunday school teacher/nursery care, as well as Awana Leader.

But, I am not sure what you mean by the above. :confused3

My Step-Sister works there and really loves the school.

Kimya

DH and I are current students there through their DLP program. He is getting his Master's I am still working on B.S. We love it! They do SO MUCH for the students. From the description of your DD, she would absolutely love it there. Our kids are only 14, 12, 9, and 3 and we have already let them know (except for the 3 year old) that if they go to Liberty, we will foot the entire bill for each of them. We can't say enough postive things about it. You can find out alot at their website http://www.liberty.edu/ It may be father away than you would like, but they take really good care of their students. :thumbsup2

I have a few friends and many other people I met who started at Liberty before transferring to the university I attended. I think most of them just got tired of cold winters though, since my college was in West Palm Beach, FL. ;) :beach: That and our school wasn't as strict as Liberty but was still a good Christian school.

If your child wants a religious/big college setting then it is fine. It doesn't carry the academic reputation of a Harvard, a UVA or even a Virginia Tech. When applying for jobs out of college, employers (churches) would look favorable on the degree. Others might or might not because of its association with Reverend Falwell, depending on how they feel about his religion and politics. Depends on what she wants to do following graduation. It fills a niche. She has to decide if it is the correct niche for her.

There are many smaller Christian colleges as well. Liberty offers a university feel, more than many. Big school athletics, Lynchburg is a nice city, the students are diverse.

Thanks for everyone's input. It is such a big decision. She wants to major in elementary education. As far as Harvard, UVA or Virginia Tech, she couldn't get into, nor could we afford those.

My niece and nephew go there, they love it!!! She is finishing up her nursing degree, he is going there to be a minister. My other nephew just started there after transfering up from some college in Florida. Not sure what he is majoring in.

Being in NJ--there are tons of school with a great education college/department.

TCNJ
Rutgers
and
Rowan come to mind immediately.

If you need/desire the Christian route, my nephews go to Messiah (It's in PA --not as far as VA)

Harvard, Yale, and Princeton offer VERY generous financial aid programs. Yale waives a parental contribution for families making under $60,000 and has phased out student loans for most students. Even families making $200,000 are eligible for financial aid.

I know that you said that Harvard is not an option for your daughter, but I felt the need to comment on the statement about it being too expensive. Too many parents assume that the Ivy League is prohibitively expensive and that is just not true. I went to Yale on almost 100% financial aid and my parents contributed just $1,000 a year.

Good luck to your daughter!

OT: sorry
My dad brought this up the other day, he read about it in our local newspaper, I told him not to get his hopes up. While I'm a good student, the closest I'm getting to an Ivy is UVA or William and Mary(and those are probably reach schools). Out of curiosity, have other Ivy league schools, besides the ones you've mentioned, taken up the same financial policies?

Back on topic: I've visited Liberty through their college for a weekend program, I highly recommend she visits for one of those weekends. I have friends who are currently going there and also some who are alumni, I only know of one who absolutely hated it, the rest love it there. I'm considering going there myself, but my parents aren't to thrilled about that; I want to go into the medical field(becoming a physician assistant or doctor), and they worry that a biology degree from a christian college won't be taken seriously by graduate programs.

Good luck to your daughter :goodvibes

She could not get into those..her SATs and GPA wouldn't qualify. If she was able to get into Harvard or Yale, probably she would use scholarships, etc.

DS is a sophomore at TCNJ, and had decent SATs and GPA, and we are still paying out of pocket minus the Stafford Loans he took out.
