Hi, my DH and I are going to Disney for the first time very soon, and I am making ADRs now. Since we are on the Disney Dining Plan, I'm trying to pick table service restaurants that will give us the most bang for our buck. I would like to do at least one buffet/family style restaurant, but I'm torn between Liberty Tree Tavern and Boma.

I have a very adventurous palate; DH, not so much. Ambiance is also really important to us. Knowing this, which would you recommend for us Disney first-timers? Thanks in advance!

Sometimes I feel like it's not a popular opinion, but I really love LTT. The food is delicious, and since DF and I are history nerds we totally get into the theming.

I like Boma too, but I don't return to it often like I do with LTT. I also don't eat enough from the Boma line up... except for zebra domes. Those are the bees' knees!

While the food at Boma was good, I will never go there again with my three kids. There was a pretty long line at the bus stop to get to AKL. Once we got to AKL, Boma's lobby was packed with people. We waited 30-45 min. just to get our table. Once at the table, we had to wait in the buffet line for 10-15 min. to get our food. Not exactly convenient with little ones. Our adr was at 6pm. We didn't even start eating until 7:30. For a buffet, that is way too excessive imo.
LTT was the opposite experience. Food was also good, but service was much quicker. We were in and out of there within an hour :)

Without a doubt Boma is better. This is coming from someone who really likes LTT. It's just not nearly as good as Boma.

However, if it is your first time, I suggest you make sure you know how you're getting to AKL (are you driving? staying at the lodge?) as it will require some time to get to AKL from any of the parks.

Boma (and Sanaa and Jiko) are well worth the jaunt to AKL, but it does take some planning!

Boma.
LTT - food was only decent, waitress was pretty unfriendly.

You can't go wrong with AK table service meals.

We are relying on the mercies of Disney transportation for all of our needs. We're staying at POP century. Pre-dinner, we were going to be at MK. How long would it take to travel from MK to AKL, using Disney transport (buses etc.)? We are not the most knowledgeable about Disney geography!

I would give myself an hour using the buses. MK to AKL is actually quite far- one of the farthest trips on property. Definitely doable just want to budget your time the right way! Also remember that there is no direct bus from AKL to Pop- after dinner you will need to take a bus to another park/DTD before returning to Pop.

We ate at both on our last trip and I would go with LTT, ecspecially if your already gonna be at MK. Those buses can be a bit of a headache in my opinion and you will get to enjoy more of the park as opposed to waiting at a bus stop. It took us about an hour to get from MK to AKL. I don't have a very adventurous palate either so I wasn't really crazy about the food at Boma. I will say we ate lunch at LTT as opposed to dinner and the gooey toffee cake(which is only served at lunch) was amazing and might have skewed my opinion on how good the food was there lol

How about driving from MK to AKL? We are considering maybe doing a rental car as well? Thanks everyone for you helpful advice!

Liberty Tree Tavern is great for lunch when you can order your own entree, but I don't think its family style service is so great. Boma is definitely one of our favorite restaurants (for breakfast and dinner), though it is pricey at dinner.

LOVE Boma!!!!! The only advantage to LTT, in my opinion, is that it's located in MK. If you have access to a car, I would definitely choose Boma.

It's food you care about. The offerings are not THAT exotic to scare the timid palate.

The dinner at LTT is really pretty mediocre.

Now as for other factors ..

LTT does have a nice colonial aura to it.

Bomas, located in AkL has it's own aura and visiting and checking out the AKL lobby is a very worthy experience. It's not very often that most of us can get a semblance of what Africa is about.

But the schlepp via bus to AKL, an hour as other posters note, is a bit much in my opinion.

If you're already in the MK, LTT is certainly much more convenient.

Boma would be my choice. We've never eaten at LTT as it really doesn't appeal to us, but we love Boma. There are unique items on the buffet, but there are also plenty of other options for the non-adventurous eater. We also like the atmosphere.

I ate at both in September and prefer LTT. Boma was good but it was loud, service just so so, had to wait in line forever to even get food.

LTT was great. All the food was fresh, service was great.

If you do decide on boma and don't have a car, I'd recommend taking a taxi back to pop. We took a taxi from CBR and it was only $13.

For food, we would choose BOMA every time. It is one of our favorite places to eat. We had LTT lunch on our last trip (it was our first time eating there) and it was just fine, but not anything I can't get at home. Now, if we were having a MK park day, and I didn't want to lose 4 hours of park time going to AKL for dinner, then I would choose LTT.

Going by food alone, boma is much better. There's a reason people joke about LBT tasting like frozen food (lunch is much better then dinner though). Having said that, if you're already at the MK... We'll, AKL is a good trip away.
