Lets use this thread to track Port Upgrades

I'm curious if there is anyone that was able to get an upgrade on a Mediterranean cruise? We're booked for a GTY 9C room this July but would love to upgrade up to a veranda stateroom. Right now it's like an extra $4000 so I'm really hoping that 1) there will be an available upgrade and 2)it will be significantly lower in price. Either way, I'm just excited to be going but just wondered if upgrades were possible on the European cruises. :scratchin

I checked in around 1pm for my med cruise last July and there were no upgrades available. Maybe earlier in the day? ???

1. What catagory did you pay for? *VGT - ended up being assigned 4C
#2. Which Ship? Dream
#3. Number of Nights? 4nights (Nassau/CC)
#4. Month/Year of Sailing - February 2, 2014
#5. What was your Port of Arrival time assignment? 10:45a
#6. What time did you check-in? about 11am
#7. What catagory were you offered for upgrade? CatT - this is the only category I asked about - there was only one Cat T available
#8. How much was the upgrade? $1100

A HUGE thank you to everyone who posted about how to get a port upgrade. This was our first cruise and we would not have enjoyed it nearly as much without being upgraded to a Cat T. I was thrilled to get such a great deal - if I ever cruise again I will definitely have to purchase the Cat T upfront, as I cannot go without concierge!!

#1. What catagory did you pay for? 5A - FL Resident Rate
#2. Which Ship? Dream
#3. Number of Nights? 4
#4. Month/Year of Sailing? 2/09/2014
#5. What was your Port of Arrival time assignment? 11:30
#6. What time did you check-in? At the Port and in line by 10:00. We checked in at 10:35 then went straight to the supervisor's desk.
#7. What catagory were you offered for upgrade? 4A
#8. How much was the upgrade? $260

We of course wanted a concierge, but none were available. We also did not take the 4A. The price is retail difference between 5A and 4A, and didn't want the little extra room that bad. Price should have been a lot lower.

I am curious if others had seen retail price difference, or if we got a CM that didn't know what he was doing?

We have seen retail price difference and MORE than retail price difference when asking about upgrades. The only good deals we have ever been offered is to upgrade to concierge (which was out of budget).

Has anybody found any increase in the availability of upgrades in the last week in August? One of the benefits of coming from our side of the pond is our schools go back at the beginning of September and the cruise prices appear to drop dramatically

We have a 8B and was hoping to upgrade to a 4A at the ports. I hate that they didn't offer you a lesser price. This makes me think that I might not get a good offer to upgrade either. Right now there are lots of rooms left and the cruise is the first week of May. I am thinking that there will be rooms available but I am not willing to pay much for a upgrade.
Also I have read where people get upgraded before hand without asking. We just got our luggage tags. Does this mean that there is no chance they will upgrade us on thier own ahead of time? I can always dream. :rolleyes1

Also if our luggage tags have the reserved stateroom number on them and then I upgrade how does that work?

Thanks!

I have not heard of anyone getting upgraded without asking unless they had Guaranteed verandah let's just say and they were guaranteed a 7a and ended up being assigned a 5a. And if you upgrade at port, they will make sure your luggage gets transferred to your new room, however we have upgraded to concierge last 3 cruises n it seems to take longer so last cruise we went to our old stateroom and actually found our luggage there as it had new numbers on our tags but hadn't been transferred yet so we grabbed it and told concierge and it was fine. You will always get it though as we have never had a problem!!

What cruises/ships were you on for the upgrade please? We always get there right at 10:45 and find them not available. Congrats BTW!!

Last week there were upgrades available on the Dream but they wanted full price for them!! I couldn't believe they didn't even offer us a discount! Oh well we had a good room anyway so not that big of a deal. :)

Does anyone have an idea why upgrades at the port would not be discounted? Do they have a high confidence that they will be taken at full price?

Just curious...thanks!

I did see a sign at customer service the next day that said the ship was sailing at full capacity so maybe that is why. I would think though that most ships sail at full capacity (or close to it).

With staterooms still open at 11:30 I do wonder how they sell those at the last minute. Do people just show up at the last minute in port and take whatever is open? I doubt they got a discount either.

There's 2 different capacity on a ship. One is the maximum number of passengers are onboard with all cabins full. The other is available cabins. On the classics for example and eventually the Dream class DCL will block a given number of cabins for routine maintenance for things like wiring upgrades plumbing upgrades etc. It can vary from cruise to cruise.

I guess I haven't thought of them blocking rooms for maintenance. With the fast turn around of cruises I don't see how they have time to clean much less anything else.
The lady at customer service did tell us that all rooms were booked and there was aprox. 3700 passengers on the ship. I was surprised since a few weeks ago there were still A LOT of rooms still open and so I expected less people on that cruise. It still amazes me with that many people on one ship and how Disney has enough going on so that you never feel like it is too crowded (with the exception of pirate night or the pools some of the time). I routinely was on a deck or in an area that didn't have anyone else around or only had a few people. It was SO nice! Disney really knows how to do it right!

1. We paid for 4B
2. Fantasy May 10
3. Arrived at Port 10 am, first bus from MCO
4. Only Cat V's available. Paid $595

Following

We are coming from WDW and were told with Disney transport we should not expect to arrive until 12:30-1:00. We were also advised that if we book private transport we would not be allowed in to the port until 11:00. Does anyone know if that is also true for rental car? What is the earliest (not using Disney Transport) people have been successful checking in?

We are on the Fantasy 7-night eastern Sept 20 and hoping for an upgrade...
