Let's talk trip insurance...

Well, My DH is in the guard (he flys for the congressman and senators) so he never knows when he may have to cancel something and leave. The travel insurance in our case does cover everything, including tickets to the Christmas party and airfare as long as DH presents his orders. We called and verified all of this before purchasing anything. In our particular case, the insurance was very beneficial. It really depends on the individual. Thanks! April

Oh, I absolutely agree! In a situation such as yours, I would probably consider it as well. For us however, it would just not "pay off" per say. I figure if something big ever did happen, the money I saved by not buying it in past years more than makes up for what would be a very minimal loss, in our case, either way.

As you state, it really, really does depend on the individuals circumstances. :)

Domestic travel (even including air) is rarely a financially destructive event if its cancelled. If you have any sort of decent medical insurance your worst case scenario out of pocket is neglible and would easily by offset by a few years of insurance.

I generally agree but airline cancellation fees/change fees can be as high as $150 and airlines are unlikely to issue refunds even if the passenger has a good story. I think travel insurance may make sense if those travellers also book a vacation home/condo/rent DVC points. Chances are their lodgings are pre-paid with no refund if they have to cancel.

Caution: Travelex will not cover H1N1. It will only cover it if you have to be qurantined. In other words If you contract h1n1 and just feel plain lousy you are not covered! I called and spoke with a travelex agent directly.
I'm sure you know you're exaggerating but for the benefit of people reading this thread "feeling just plain lousy" isn't enough to trigger coverage. Although a doctor may not have to officially quarantine you, most carriers will require a doctor's determination that you're not able to travel.

We bought the TravelGuard (AIG) with our Disney Pkg. I ended up in the ER at Celebration and racked up over $4000 in medical bills. The hospital billed TG directly and the all the bills were paid promptly. I was never questioned or hassled about the reasons, pre-existing etc. TG sent me stmts and kept me informed of their payments and I did not pay a penny. They also have a great on-line system to track the status of claims. Every rep I spoke with was nice and competant. I will never skip ins now.

Disney is located in the United States.:) Your health insurance policy would have covered you. Almost all plans offer coverage in a non-network hospital if it's an emergency and there aren't any network facilities in the area.

Yes, they will let you cance if your Doctor determines you are not fit to travel however, they will not insure if you cancel due to contracting H1N1. In other words if I prove it was H1N1 i'm covered even if I don't provide a note from doctor saying I can't fly. Providing a letter stating you contracted gives you the option to cancel.

On another note some policys will not cover H1N1 they are not treating it as a normal illness due to epidemic status.

My suggestion to everyone out there is do your own homework and decide what is best for you.

Happy travel everyone :)

I hope you're exaggerating to make a point.
Swine flu is treated as any other illness. If you become ill with it, coverage is afforded as long as the illness was not pre-existing.
Any illness has to be severe enough to preculde travel. A mild case of H1N1, that's all but run it's course, might not be enough to trigger coverage. Plan on having a problem with a claim if your doctor says you're healthy enough to travel but you prefer to cancel your trip.

Most of us won't be cancelling a trip if our doctor tells us we're healthy enough to travel. There are some posters NOT IN THIS THREAD who are looking for a cancel for any reason policy or are looking for coverage due to job loss without paying for such a policy. I don't want some people reading this thread to think they can claim H1N1 sickness as way to trigger coverage.

You make a gread point. A few polices exclude H1N1 coverage outright. I'd avoid those carriers.

Who do you get it from? With our trip a year out, DH wants to have it "just in case" (he gets laid off...) I know I can get some from Disney, but has anyone used an outside, reputable company?

TIA!

www.insuremytrip.com is a good place to start. You can compare many different companies, policies and coverages. Many policies will also waive pre-existing conditions if you purchase within so many days of deposit. Read the fine print. It gives you a starting point. You can also explore each of the companies or policies at their respective websites or calling them directly.

I don't usually purchase it for a domestic vacation, but we will be getting it for our upcoming cruise.

while others will allow u to add the insurance before final payment (albiet a higher premium than it would've cost if booking initially)

you can call insure my trip & describe exactly what your needs/concerns are and they will walk you thru the process, making several recommendations:thumbsup2

fyi, many of the insurers require you to prepay any incidentals and then be reimbursed (i had this happen aboard a cruise when i needed medical attention for infected bug bite, as i didn't buy the cruiseline's insurance). Not a big deal as I ran it thru the CC i had listed for onboard account and received a check from the insurer, after submitted required receipts/documentation, before the bill arrived.

We ended up getting a policy from TruTravel which is underwritten by Nationwide and will cover H1N1 with no stipulations other than can not be pre exsisting. $99 for a 3K policy.

I just called up Travelex myself, since I purchase my travel insurance through them and specifically asked if H1N1 was covered if I was unable to travel and have a physicians note. It is covered as long as the effective date of the was prior to the illness.

They are NOT excluding the H1N1.

I understand that if I just was feeling lousy, but still okay to travel that is not covered. My concern is that someone in my traveling party had a really high fever and shouldn't be traveling, not just getting H1N1.

I couldn't go on a business trip to Vegas once due to a high fever (103) and sinus infection. I really wanted to go, but there was no way I could get on that plane. My doctor provided me with a note for my employer stating that I could not travel. My doctor even called me at home the next day to make sure I didn't go.

Our policy through Travelex (basic policy) is underwritten by Nationwide too.

I called again myself and spoke to a very knowledgeable agent...she has confirmed that h1n1 is covered and explained the term "quarantine" meaning the doctor states you either have to stay in the hospital or in your bed at the hotel. I was originally told the first time i called quarantine meant in the hospital only.

Thank you everyone for your input. I'll be switiching to travelex basic and saving about $39 :)

I wish I knew more about the Disney insurance. We purchased it...but the CM on the phone with me couldn't really answer my questions.

Also I was hoping I'd get some sort of documentation in the mail stating the details of the travel insurance. Nothing yet.

Hope I didn't make a mistake by purchasing it.
