we ordered countertops yesterday and the color we chose was colorado slate

here is a picture of the new kitchen, sorry it is such a bad picture but thats the only angle i could use to get the whole kitchen

Okay, here are some pics of my kitchen now. Sorry for the strange angles. It's a galley (long, narrow) shaped kitchen, I'm finding it tough to get the pics to look right.

The counterdepth fridge that can't be pushed all the way back the area is too narrow for this fridge or any other, that I have considered to avoid this remodel. The freezer door won't open when it is pushed back. Also missing door moulding to be able to move the fridge. (It's been in this position, since being pulled out to clean out the mess from Katrina.) The wood floors are damaged underneath & around the fridge. Moving that wall next to the fridge further into the dining room is one option. This would still involve either removing the overheard cabinets to take off the furdown or at a minimum extending the furdown above the stove.

The furdown above the cabinets we are considering removing and the range I want to change.

This is the other side of the kitchen & cabinets over the bar. We are thinking of removing the furdown & either leaving the cabinets out altogether or putting them back directly on the ceiling.

The light fixture that has got to go!

The backsplash that is too close to the faucet, the caulking is all gross & discolored. The backsplash is going to be changed with the tiles I posted yesterday or something similar.

Another pic of the furdown we are considering removing. If we remove it decorative crown moulding will be put on top of the cabinets.

And this is the view from the den of the glass cabinets & bar. The walls are papered paneling now, that & all of the walls in the connecting den are going to be sheetrocked. We are also going to put up crown mouldings on the walls in the den (and part of the kitchen) area. We are now also debating on what to do about the now stained mouldings & whether or not to paint them or put up stained crown moulding or paint the crown moulding to match the new wall color & not have it match the floor mouldings.

One of the contractor's ideas is to pull all of that out a few inches towards the back of the house (away from the dining room) to open up more room for the fridge.
If anyone thinks the furdown is not dated ( or going to be too dated very soon) please tell me. (Right now we are both wondering if we are insane.) One other option we are considering is taking the furdown over the glass cabinet but not the one on sink, stove side. Again, this whole remodel started with the fridge not fitting properly & damaged floors. This kitchen was remodeled only 5/6 years ago. Suggestions are welcome, we have been back in touch with the contractor & he is still thinking about all the options.

Wow....Y'all have some great projects going.....I just stumbled across this thread today.

Right now, we're mid-project on putting up a privacy fence, gutting and remodeling the upstairs bathroom, replacing the subfloor and flooring through out the upstairs, and having new windows installed.

Up next on the list once these are complete is the downstairs bathroom and possibly the flooring throughout the downstairs.

I have some pics of the bathroom pre-demo that I'll have to post once I get them off the camera. Right now it's just studs and subfloor.

Shovan, I was going to say this earlier and forgot:

I used to sell new houses and the builder that I worked for has a very good reputation here in Texas. They were totally going away from using furdowns, and going with taller upper cabinets instead. I do believe that is the more updated look.

I kept reading furdowns and kept thinking WTH are those. I then saw the pictures and realized that in Missouri they are soffits. Funny how things are called something different all over.

Am I There Yet, The ceilings are 8 ft. & we are not going to change cabinets if we can help it. Do you think that taking them down to tear out the furdown & put them back up with the newer style mouldings on top will make a big enough difference to make it worthwhile?

Thanks. I can't believe I finally found a vanity I liked. On ebay, no less. I like it so much, that we're looking for a similar one for the upstairs powder room. (See how I can sneak another mini-remodel in?)

The basement is like another living level. Its a walk out. It was already framed out into rooms, like a regular first floor, instead of a wide open space. We didn't want to mess with changing structural supports that basically hold up the house, so we finished it as is. I don't have the stomach for messing with structural beams.

As you can see, we still have a way to go. Carpet runner for the stairs, tile for the bathroom and backspash in the kitchen, doorknobs. The list goes on and on.

And the budget has been exceeded a long, long time ago.

I think I would tear out the soffits myself. I think they do make kitchens look a bit dated. Our kitchen does not have them. Our cabinets do not go to the ceiling either. I put some decorative items on top of the cabinets. They are a couple of looks you can go with without the soffits.

Thanks means alot coming from someone with such great taste & you & your DW! That wine rack is not just a decorative item in my house it gets lots of use! We are also trying to figure a way to fit in a wine fridge!

I had to get some confirmation on doing this or not. My family thinks I'm nuts!



Anyone have any ideas on putting the glass cabinets back up over the bar, attached to the ceiling or leaving them out altogether? Hopefully I'll be able to wait till they are down to make the decision.

Any ideas on the ceiling mouldings going up with the older light stained moulding? I can paint all of the mouldings white (this will mean painting all of them all over the house) & put up new crown moulding to match. Or leave them as is & put up light stained moulding Or a painting it a similar color that would sort of match the color of the stained wood. Or not match the wood & match the wall color.

We have been racking our brains trying to come up with a better layout of the kitchen without totally gutting it, but just can't figure that one out.
