Let's talk furniture!

We need new living room furniture and I would love some input especially from those of you who have sectionals. We've never had sectional furniture but I really like the look and comfort. Definitely want leather since this is what we have now. I am really drawn to the sectionals with a chaise lounge but I can't decide if that is a good decision or not! Planning to pay cash so I am working on a budget for it now.

In addition, we are looking at purchasing a bedroom set for DD who is almost 3. I'm not much into "themed" furniture but we fell in love with the Disney Princess furniture at Rooms to Go! Does anyone have experience with it? Prefer to go with white so that would work out well.

DH got a big promotion at work and we paid off two vehicles so we are excited about being able to get the furniture we need by paying cash I plan to keep the furniture for at least 10 years or more so I want to make sure that we like it and it will hold up.

We just got a Temple sectional and LOVE IT! It was more expensive than something you'd find a Value City or Levin, but the quality is amazing. My mom got a Flexsteel sectional for a bit cheaper than ours and she loves it. Both companies offer leather options.

we bought a flexsteel sectional over 10 years ago. It needs cleaned but other than that, it still looks great. No sagging. It has two loungers on each end and a pull-out bed. Kids used that quite a bit growing up and still do when we have people stay over. Hubby wanted a new set for the family room, otherwise it would still be there. What we replaced it with is about three years old and it stinks. I will never buy that brand again--bought from Sofa Select. Did not hold up to older kids, less rambunctious, and the cushions are flattening. We probably paid about the same and the flexsteel looks better still. I wish it wasn't so much to reupholster it, probably cheaper in the long run to do that though.

The sectional we had previous to the one we have now had a chaise lounge. It seemed like a good idea in the beginning, a nice place to lay. It was a total waste. Nobody liked having to crawl onto it and it was equally difficult to get off. Not one of my family members actually laid on the chaise part. In addition it took up a big portion of the living room. So my best advice is when you find the couch you like actually lay down and get on and off it a few times to see if it is something you will want to do. Good luck with your search!!

We have a sectional with a chaise. We do use the chaise, either for one person to recline or for two people to sit up (or snuggle). We really love our sectional (Cindy Crawford line from Raymour and Flannigan). It is big, but our family room is big and it fills the room nicely and either lets our family spread out or provides extra seating for parties.

If you want the furniture to last, you have to be willing to pay a little more. We've bought plenty of IKEA furniture in the past (and probably will again) but it looks pretty worn after a year or two.

Thanks so much for the input! I will look into Flexsteel, they do have a local dealer in my area. Hmm, still not sure about the chaise...maybe we will be better off just getting a large leather ottoman instead.

Sorry, no help on the Princess, but we also have a Flexsteel sectional. It has 3 recliners, one on each end, and one in the corner. If a 4th or 5th person sits with us, they can share the footrests. I LOVE it, most comfortable sofa I have ever had.

My sectional has 2 armrests, just like a regular couch, there is just more seating space in between. I am not sure why that would be an issue?

I don't like sitting in the middle of a couch either! In my house, there's a loveseat, a couch, and a recliner. I can seat 6 people, and 5 of them will have at least one armrest (everyone except the person in the middle of the couch). In my brother in law's house, there's a big sectional with recliners on the ends. It seats 6, but only 2 people get armrests. And I've gotta have an armrest.

Great point about the armrests....I prefer to have them also. I found a set at Furniture Row called The Cloud which allows you to configure the sectional however you need it. It looks as though you can place a storage console with armrest anywhere you need it, although I don't know if it would work positioned next to the corner wedge. Hmmm, I am very undecided about this!

I checked the sectionals on the Flexsteel website but there only a couple of styles with leather reclining sectionals.

We have Flexsteel and LOVE it! It isn't a sectional, it is a sofa, but we love it.

OP I am currently looking for leather sectional as well. I am glad if found this. I dont know what flexsteel is so will check it out since there have been many posts about it. I like the Cindy Crawford from raymour & fllanagan, price is about $4399 before tax and delivery which is why i keep looking.

I have a sectional w/ chaise from Calico Corners (the style is called "Classic Home"), as well as a fabric storage ottoman, and I love it! The only "down side" for me is tht I don't have a good tray to put on the ottoman for folks to set their drinks on, so sometimes the drinks aren't as nicely accessible, but otherwise I love it!

We have an older sectional and a wood floor...so the sections separate. It's awful! I would hope the newer sectionals have a method of keeping the parts together. That's my only thought about sectionals.

Friends of ours gave us their Bassett sectional when they swapped out their family room. I loved the quality of it, but a sectional wasn't a great visual fit for our family room. Our room is 30x16, and the sectional kind of gave that end of the room a tunnel effect.

We have since swapped to a sofa, and oversized chair in place of the sectional (plus we've always had 2 other chairs to round out the seating). I really prefer the visually "lighter" effect of separate pieces. Also, if I want to rearrange, it's easier to find more configurations. I enjoyed the sectional, it just wasn't right for our family room. However, I have to give a shout out to Bassett furniture. It's what we purchased subsequently. I love that they have about 1000 fabrics to choose from, and our furniture has worn very well, despite kids and pets.

Our Flexsteel does have connectors on the edges of each piece that locks them together.

Ours has a connector, too.

Here's the best picture I could find of my furniture - it's faux suede for the sectional, and the ottoman is a fabric I just LOVE! (I work at Calico Corners - fabric is my current addiction...)

You can just see the edge of the chaise in the left hand side of the picture.

We have wood floors as well and recently found floor grippers. They are rubber caps that fit on the feet and so far our couch has not budged. This sectional does not connect but our previous one did and that did help with the movement as well.

We have a sectional and the one problem I have with it is that DH and I always sit in the same spots so those 2 sections are starting to look a bit worn.

We're ordering log bunk beds for our girls today! Then we'll use princess or tink for the sheets and bedspreads.
