It must be apple season, right? Will I still be able to get apples from the orchard at the end of October? I should know that but I don't.

Having volunteeritis this year, I'm planning the Fall Party for dd's class. Think Halloween but we're not allowed to call it Halloween.

Anyway, I was thinking I could have the class make candy apples or carmel apples or something. I have no idea how? Anyone have directions that could be passed on to me.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Denise--Here in MIchigan it is apple season till the middle of November. I make caramel apples every year. The recipe I use is on the bag of Kraft Caramels--it is very good and easy. I roll the caramel apples in peanuts, mini-chips or toffee bits. Some things may be a no-no with kids and allergies. I look for the bags of caramels that have the sticks in them, and use the smaller tart apples. Yummy! I always let my boys help me--they loved it!

Thanks Deb,

I was thinking about the kraft caramels, but how would I melt them in the classroom?

Any other topping ideas?

How about using a slow cooker? I did a google search and there's recipes for keeping the caramels warm and melted in a slow cooker.

I just wanted to say that I feel for you. I was DS's room mom last year. It is a lot of work. We were able to call it a Halloween party but couldn't have anything christmasy for the holiday party. Our neighboring school district doesn't allow any school parties at all because they have a large population of Jehova's Witnesses.
Good luck with your parties this year.

How about a crock pot to melt the caramels - not hot to the touch on the outside so less chance of the kids getting burned. There is a store about 45 minutes from us (at a local outlet mall) that sells covered apples galore...caramel, chocolate, turtle apples, white-dark-milk chocolate drizzled - I make the drive for the apples alone sometimes...

Thanks everyone,

Crock Pot, Excellent. I think mine will be too big though.

etink, Thanks I'm going to need the good luck vibes.

I did a "make-your-own candy apple" night with my teenagers and their friends a couple of years ago, and they loved it! Of course, we were at home when we made them, but the ideas you mentioned were along the same as ours for toppings/extras. Who knew that older teenagers would still find so much fun and excitement in something so simple? Come to think of it, I might let them do that again this year. (Sounds like something I would enjoy too! ;) )

Just another idea? You could melt the caramels at home--then take them to school and micro them to warm them up. Our teachers lounge has a micro for warming lunches. You want the kids to dip from something narrow and deep to keep them from loosing the apple. Maybe they would like colored sprinkles to roll them in. Whats a little more sugar. Something I did as a room mom--many years ago--my 3 boys are all grown--was decorating large pumpkin cookies. I would bake big cut-outs, make orange frosting, then lots of add-ons and let them make them into jack-o-lanterns.
Enjoy every minute they grow too fast!!!

Oooh, I like the color sprinkles idea. I'm going to crush oreo's as well.

cookie decorating, and cupcake decorating, yes that is always fun for the kids. We did that for Preschool and Kindergarden and first grade.

This year we have been asked to not do cookies and cupcakes for parties. We have to incorporate fruit and veggies. I know I'm bending the rule with caramel apples, but its a party.

another thing to do is to dip the big pretzel sticks in chocolate (white, milk or dark) and then roll in toppings like the apples.....who could argue with a pretzel? The kids love them!!! JUst an idea because some kids don't like fruit and depending on the age of the kids...braces....

DDs teacher used to make haunted houses for Halloween. They used graham crackers around a milk carton and frosting to hold it together. Then you use candy (halloween and otherwise) to decorate it.
