Let's Stop Stereotyping Evangelicals

So true! I know many evangelicals right here on the DIS that don't fit the popular stereotypes!

BTW, who's Mike?
Mike is Cardaway. He and I are friends from many of years of posting back and forth on the DIS and other sites.

This made this think of something. What IS the stereotype of evangelicals? :confused3 I can make some guesses about what some others on here think, but maybe I shouldn't do that. For those of you who don't consider yourself to be one, what IS the "evangelical stereotype"?

Ummm... the person he was responding to. Me. :)

Yup, that just dawned on me.

I'm so used to calling you Cardaway, I don't know if you "look" like a Mike or not. ;)

Great to see you again Don. I hope you and Mandy are doing well. :)

I'm glad you brought up the ratio angle because IMO it's the clear root cause of the issue at hand. The ratio of extreme members in other groups simply isn't any where near the ratio found in Evangelicals. I have a feeling the people within the larger group don't see it that way, but I think I'm correct in saying that this article wasn't written to respond to what the group thinks of itself.
What groups would you say are Evangelical, or at least Evangelicals that contain the types of extremists we are discussing.

(note, I have to run, I will respond to replies to this question later this evening.).

I'm not sure I want to open this can of worms, but....

I think the stereotype of evangelicals is:

1. Uneducated
2. Bigoted (got that word from another thread)
3. Hypocritical

I also think that many people think that evangelicals say they love their neighbors, but don't actually love them.

Anyway, I post all that to say, the evangelicals I've met on the DIS (most of them anyway) aren't like this at all...and neither are the ones I see in church.

The kids are great! Thanks for asking. They're tearing up the livingroom as we speak. They said to tell you hi! :rotfl:

A man walks into a psychiatrist's office wearing nothing but Saran wrap..The doctor takes one look at him and says "Sir, I can clearly see you're nuts

sorry,wrong thread :woohoo:

Joy, I know I might be opening up a big ol' can of worms -and I may come to regret it, but it just occurs to me that people have this stereotype (thanks for starting the list ;) ) that is really not close to the truth. We can all agree (I hope) that the vicious stereotypes assigned to racial and ethnic minorities are ignorant and cruel. This same truth can be applied to stereotypes of evengelicals. :grouphug:

Here's a perfect example of how
I like my Christian friends...with a
sense of humor instead of superiority.
I like Christians to be human instead
of God-like which I realize is against
their teachings, but some of them
act like they are God and that others
who are not Christians are EVIL.
Evangelicals, I'm not gonna go there,
at least, I'm gonna try because they,
in my mind are EVIL. :teeth:

You totally look like a Mike!!!

But, not a Cardaway! What's up with that? How did you pick your user name?

Hey, I'm just thrilled that some sane scholarly folks made some positive associations about evangelicals. I believe there are lots of good things about us. We sure aren't perfect... God is still working on us. :sunny:
Not to isolate in all the points you raised, but many groups of evangelicals do NOT favor banning the teaching of science in favor of creationism. My denomination (United Methodist) does not.

Uhh, Chritian is not necessarily Evangelical. I would hardly classify the typical Methodist as an Evangelical. Most of my family is United Methodist, and they don't fit the contemporary definition of Evangelical, but they are Christian.
