Let's Make Sundaes

Apparently walnuts mixed with maple syrup.

Hmmm. I didn’t know that. I think I’ve had them, just didn’t know what they were. They don’t belong on my sundae—don’t love them or hate them—not worth the calories to me.

Sort of, there are different recipes, but it’s a syrup with walnuts ( I happen to love maple syrup and love walnuts, actually love maple walnut ice cream). They were a very popular sundae topping when I was growing up, every ice cream place had them and stores sold different brands, now I can’t find them anymore. I also think they might be regional, my sister moved to the Midwest and no one ever heard of them.

In the summer, vanilla ice cream with pineapple topping, whipped cream and the works. A nice, light treat in the heat.

In the winter, when the ice cream doesn’t melt so fast, chocolate ice cream, hot fudge and caramel sauce, whipped cream and the works.

I’m about to make some wet walnuts right now, I see a sundae in my future.
Ummm so you can't just drop that and not include a recipe, LOL. The walnuts have always been some mystery thing the only lived at Carvel and maybe sometimes I could find in a little Smuckers jar for $5, not sure what they are but it's not maple syrup. If there is a way I can make some can you please share the recipe?

Oh and while I haven't indulged in ages I am also into banana splits, but I can't do the 3 scoop kind, more like little mini ones with one scoop, a banana, chocolate fudge, caramel, those sweet walnuts and as many multicolor jimmies as the people at the counter will give me. Every so often I would get one of my sons high school friends at the local ice cream spot and she would make the soft ice cream sculpture hollow and put more jimmies in it and then cover the top with ice cream so it was just splendid - she is still one of my favorite people.

I had never heard of them either, so glad someone asked. Might have to be something you grew up with, idk. Not a huge fan of nuts on my ice cream, anyway. But I do like maple, so could probably be persuaded to try them. :p

I’ve made this twice (my kids love it), it’s easy and tastes to me like the jarred smuckers from childhood. https://bunnyswarmoven.net/wet-walnuts/ I add an extra 1/2 cup of walnuts.

OMG, talk about a sugar bomb! Corn syrup AND sugar? Yikes. I love sugar, don't get me wrong, but this just seems criminal.
Yes, it’s basically corn syrup and simple syrup. I don’t even have a sweet tooth, not a dessert eater, won’t drink soda, juice, lemonade, really just unsweetened iced tea, coffee, and water for me, but when I eat sweet, I do like sweet!

Traditional hot fudge sundae (ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts, cherry on top) but the ice cream is Graeter's Coconut Chocolate Chip ice cream.

Many years ago I was at a restaurant and asked for a hot fudge sundae with vanilla ice cream. The manager told me they were out of vanilla ice cream. When I showed great disappointment, he asked if I had ever had a hot fudge sundae with black raspberry ice cream. It sounded strange to me but I gave it a try. Oh my goodness. It was the best sundae I ever had and still have it whenever I can find the black raspberry ice cream. Highly recommend.

I have to admit that I did buy walnuts in honey locally, but to me they were not as good as wet walnuts.

So what's the best way to heat up hot fudge? I have a glass jar of Smucker's hot fudge in my fridge. Usually I heat it for a short time, stir it, then heat it again.

I tried the microwavable bottle but the instructions said to heat if for no longer than 45 seconds and after that it was still too thick.

I never heat the jar because I am only using a portion of it. I scoop some out of the jar into a small dish and heat for 30 seconds at 50% power or so.
