There has been a few threads making fun of bad spellers.

I am a Bad Speller. You know how some children have learning disabliltys...well they become adults. I will never be able to spell like some of you can. No one is as disapointed as my Mother. She can not understand how I can have a high IQ & not master spelling like she can. I use spell check when posting if I think I have a word wrong.

What was the point of the spelling/grammer threads? If it was to make a bad speller feel bad, Good Job. :thumbsup2

I have always been a good speller. Lately though because of some undiagnosed medical problem I struggle now to spell things correctly. I've also been having a hard time typing. I have to go back through all my posts and check them carefully because of my mistakes. It's very strange and it drives me nuts.
I don't know why either people get all worked up over spelling and grammer around here.
I feel bad for the people who truly have a problem with it. (Being able to spell and use good grammer I mean).
I mean I'm sure these people know they have a hard time with it, why make them feel worse?

There are people who are good spellers and people who are bad spellers. This is just the way it is. I am a pretty good speller, but my DS is not. This does not stop him from being intelligent, thought. He just has a different way of processing information and will always need to rely on a dictionary for accurate spelling. He knows he can't spell and doesn't have a problem with it! And neither should anyone else! :teeth:

I always considered the spelling/grammar threads to be pretty tongue-in-cheek. I think both "sides" can go overboard. No one likes the grammar police, but no one likes someone who can't take a light joke and laugh at themselves.

Your spelling is not your self-worth. No one is perfect. Unless someone's egregiously rude, I don't see the huge harm in kidding about it.

I used to be a good speller. As I got older my spelling got worse, but a couple months ago I went on Topamax for migraine prevention and one side effect is that I'm forgetting how to spell words. That side effect seems to be getting a little better and when I'm at my computer I can plug the word into dictionary.com, but when I'm hand writing something it's bad, especially when the word that I'm trying to spell is a common word. Also, sometimes I'm so far off in my spelling of a word that dictionary.com can't even help me. The other day I couldn't, for the life of me, remember how to spell "priority" and I was so far off dictionary.com wasn't suggesting anything close. Thankfully I was able to laugh at myself and I did figure it out, but it was frustrating. And to make it even worse, the medication doesn't even seem to be helping my headaches. :sad2:

But I don't judge others and I hope that they don't judge me. I'd much rather have people post with not so great spelling, grammar, etc, than to not post at all. I would never point it out to someone unless it was someone I "knew" and I was truly joking. I would not want to offend someone about that (if I want to offend there are other ways I will go about it ;) ).

Well I'm a terrible speller so I installed Google's spell check. For the two seconds it takes to click on that and fix everything, I feel it's time well spent. Even so, there are times I forget to use it.

I do think proper spelling is important. It's all part of improving your life in general. Do I think it's the end of the world if someone posts with massive spelling error? Nope but when someone's said they are college educated and I see all those errors, it leaves me :sad2: :confused3

Along with the hand held calculator, spell check is the best invention of the century. :thumbsup2

Virgo, I have the google spell check on my toolbar and I've never used it. I installed the dictionary.com toolbar, but it disappeared a few days ago, so now I have to go to their site since I haven't reinstalled. On the google site do you have to search your whole page or can you look up one word?

Duh, I just tried it and I see how it works--pretty neat!

I think the boards in general have become kinda mean. :confused3

Because I havent been on these particular boards for years and years - but on other moderated Disney boards - Im kinda suprised they havent said anything yet.

Dont feel bad - AT ALL. Gimme a break. If all someone can do is pick apart silly posts on a message board, then they have too much time on their hands.

As someone's siggy says "The Internet is not meant as a subsitute for human companionship" pirate:

Im sorry your feelings got hurt...seriously. :guilty:

We had a class in 5th grade called "Teach Mr. James to Spell". He was a terrible speller. At the end of the class he gave me a dictionary inscribed with "because you are going to need it". I still have that dictionary but now I have the Google spellcheck installed :rotfl2: .

Spelling is a thing where either you have it or you don't. I don't.

Proper spelling is important because you come across as being less intelligent in papers that have improper spellings. I LOVE spell check!!!!

Wow, when I first saw this thread title I was ready to come in and rip your head off!! Then I read what you wrote and it is exactly what I was going to say. Just b/c someone is gramatically correct or can encode (technical term for spelling),it only means that they can memorize rules. Those who started the "bad sp, bad grammar" threads are really insensitive. You are so totally right about learning disabilties. Spelling is NOT and I repeat NOT related to IQ, intellegence or anything that has to do with intellectual abiltiy.

I am a sped teacher. I have autistic kids, and kids with an IQ of 63 that can spell at three or four levels above their grade. Does not mean they will ever be able to function in life? You do the math!!

So here is my message for all you people who think you are so superior because can spell and puncutuate correctly....KOKO( I am assuming you all know who she is) the Gorilla can finger "spell" (sign) a large vocabulary of words...I guess you should pat yourselves on the back you are in good
company.

OH, and P.S. I caught the word intellegence misspelled AFTER I re-read this.I edited it so the Sp/Grammar police would not come after me

.

And - apparently - many people have spell check on their machines - so theyre not even the ones spelling "correctly", they have a program to do it, so how exactly would that make you more intelligent, anyways?? Cuz you installed something?

Im not just pointing fingers at those who mentioned they had a spell-check .... it just kinda humors me.

Alright.... Im going to watch the correctly spelled, and incorrectly spelled words fly! :teeth: pirate:

Oooh...I cringed at this! I am not one to play the "disabilty" card, but I'm going to here.

My son has a very high IQ, he's very smart. Unfortunatley he has a learning disability that is called coding and encoding. Ask him a question and he will tell you the answer in such detail, ask him to write it and you won't know what he's talking about, if you can even decipher the spelling.
Is he less intelligent than you or I? Nope, smart as a whip.
It's too bad that that people are still judging a book by its cover.

(Golfgal, please don't think I am addressing this to you, it's just that quote brought up a good point.)

:hourglass Everyone makes a typo now and then, myself included. It's not the end of the world.

"Bad spelling" is not some incurable disease, however. It's extremely easy to fix; just get a dictionary or a spell checker and use it.

I don't think my daughter would get away with telling her teacher "I'm just a bad speller, and you're making me feel bad by giving me a poor grade on this essay."

Or that an employee could say to her boss, "Poor spelling is just a part of who I am and I can't change it, no matter how badly it reflects on the company when I send out error-riddled letters to clients."

I've never posted on a "spelling and grammar police" thread, but when I do see someone make the same spelling error again and again (so it is clearly not a typo), it doesn't make a good impression on me.

On a message board, that may not matter, but there are plenty of other situations in which it will matter very much. I've never hired anyone with a spelling mistake on their resume, for example.

Spelling does count; it shows you can pay attention to details and are careful and thorough.

After reading some of the posts that appeared while I was writing; no, spelling is not related to intelligence. John F. Kennedy was a notoriously bad speller, so they say. Mr. Kennedy, however, would certainly have had a secretary or assistant to proofread for him.

Spelling is not a marker of intelligence, but if a person knows they can't spell, and refuses to use any of the tools available to fix their spelling, that strikes me as lazy.

I agree - HOWEVER, it doesnt really matter much on a Disney Message Board that most of us are on for fun, to waste time, etc, etc...

Considering my DIS window is minimized to about 2 inches high so I can have it up at work - you may get plenty of typos, spelling errors etc...and I just dont care.

And for the record - I happen to spell pretty darn good. Very good, in fact. I just dont get this "Im better than you - I can spell (or use spell-check!) thing.... ON A MESSAGE BOARD!!!

Good greif. :confused3

I have to say that in this case the judging a book is really true. No, intelligence has nothing to do with spelling but it has everything to do with knowing that you are a poor speller and doing something about it like using spell check. If you don't take the time to make sure a paper has proper spelling you deserve to have a lower grade. Your son knows he has a problem, just using him as an example, then he needs to make sure something that can spell proofs his paper. This is where intelligence factors into the spelling issue.

Funny how I came across this post. I misspelt my own screen name :rotfl2: now I don't know how to fix. Oh well. Chalk it up to being human, only God is perfect.

I'm usually good at spelling but when typing I tend to reverse letters a lot. So the word cash will be spelled cahs. I don't do it on purpose, my brain thinks I'm typing it correctly. Sometimes I forget to re-read what I have typed and I have to go back and do an edit. When you see my posts edited that is usually the reason.

Other's spelling mistakes don't bother me, I have no idea if that person is possibly someone who isn't proficient in English, maybe they are just learning the language. I have no idea if the person is liked me and has a slight problem with brain to finger coordination. And sometimes spell check just doesn't catch everything.

Tell me about the Google spell Check. It will check my post? I have been using the copy & paste into my email to check.
