Let them eat steak (and maybe some cake too) Nov. 9 -14, 2011 COMPLETE

I am in! Isn't the avocado margarita amazing? I'm seriously planning our next trip right now and just cannot WAIT to go back to Cava.

Glad your experiences at San Angel and Yachtsman were good. We didn't have the best experience at SA (just the food wasn't up to what we had expected) but the steakhouse was up there in terms of the steak quality. Looking at your pictures I'm wishing I went with the cheese course.....:goodvibes

Looking forward to reading more.:thumbsup2

Great reviews so far! Those steaks look absolutely delish, and the Yachtsman Steakhouse looks really nice on the inside. I was reading the menu and a few of the side dishes caught my eye. Definitely a restaurant to consider one day! :goodvibes Looking forward to the rest of your reviews.

Great reviews! I love the format that you use! The pictures of the steaks at the Yachtsman look really delicious. I am not a huge steak person but I do enjoy a good juicy one every once in awhile!

I'm in!! ;)

We went to San Angel Inn on our July 2010 trip for lunch, and we loved it! I actually had the Tostadas de Tinga for my entree, and it was delicious! That avocado margarita looks great...I had a regular frozen one last time, and it was excellent. I am going to try the avocado margarita on our next trip (this coming July). We also loved their guacamole last time! And the kids enjoyed watching the boat ride, and they also loved their food (kids' quesadillas, then churros for dessert). :thumbsup2

We are taking the boys to 2 signature restaurants on our next trip, for the first time! One of them is Yachtsman because DS6 loves steak...it's his favorite food! I loved your review about Yachtsman! I could see DH and I sharing the porterhouse there, and adding another side dish or 2. The boys will be happy because they have steak on the kids' menu.

Our boys will be 5 and 7 when we go back in the summer...we are also taking them to California Grill!

Looking forward to reading more of your reviews, especially the next one (BW Bakery breakfast). We stay at BWV and we love the bakery, but we haven't eaten breakfast there. We usually either eat in the villa, or go to a couple of character breakfasts throughout our trip.

:welcome: Love those chicken tostadas! I might just take your idea and order them as my entree next time...so I don't have to share. :lmao:
I also love the crab tostadas that they used to have, but sadly they weren't on the menu this time. I think maybe they are on the La Cava bar menu again though. Didn't get to go there this time since DS (age 15) was with us , so can't confirm. Anybody know??? :confused3

Oh, and Yachtsman and California Grill are probably my two favorite Signatures as of now. Great choices! :thumbsup2

Thanks for reading! Our BW Bakery breakfast review is coming up shortly. :)

Thanks for joining in! And yes, the avocado margaritas are the best!!! ::yes::

Thanks for reading! :wave2: Plenty more steaks yet to come...some of them good juicy ones and others, well not so much.

Thanks! And I definitely recommend trying YSH sometime. :thumbsup2

I'll try to get at least one (maybe even two) reviews up today, so please stay tuned. :surfweb:

DAY 2

Background: My family has had quick breakfasts from the Boardwalk Bakery many, many times…too many to count. Between the five of us, we have tried most of their breakfast pastries and all have been good. However, as for my DS, he has had one thing and one thing only for breakfast at the BW Bakery...and this time was no exception. What might that be, you ask? Read on to find out. ;)

So we started our second day at around 8:00 a.m. by standing in line to enter the very small Boardwalk Bakery. Now normally at this time of day the line for the bakery looks like this… (pic taken on previous trip)

IMG_4527.jpg

But today we were in luck because the line was not quite that long and it moved pretty quickly. After a quick look at the pastries in their glass case (he actually almost got one of their delicious looking cupcakes instead ), DS got his usual…Chocolate Chip muffin and chocolate milk. So I decided to be equally boring and got a Blueberry muffin and coffee.

Blueberry Muffin and Chocolate Chip Muffin

When exiting the bakery we noticed that one of the few tables they have out front was actually open so we quickly snagged it. It was a nice day and we really enjoyed having our breakfast outside along the Boardwalk, with a beautiful view of the lake and the other resorts. It was nearly perfect; except for one thing…our muffins were stone cold, like fresh out of the refrigerator cold! So I couldn’t help but wish that we had a microwave to warm those suckers up. If only we were staying on the Villas side instead of the Inn side of the resort! ;)

So this time our experience at the Boardwalk Bakery was not quite up to snuff. Would it stop us from going there again? No way! In fact we were back there just 4 days later. :rotfl:

NEXT UP: Lunch for DS at Flame Tree Barbeque

After finishing our breakfast we caught a bus to Animal Kingdom. After stopping at the Swan, the Dolphin, the Yacht Club, and the Beach Club (man, I hate the Disney bus system sometimes :headache:), we finally arrived at the park not long after opening. Then it was off to the races, as I tried my best to keep up with my long-legged and fast-moving son (when he wants to, that is ;)) on our walk to one of his favorite Disney rides, Expedition Everest. Surprisingly, when we got there we found that EE was a walk-on and continued to be for quite awhile. Each time we got off the ride we saw there was still no line and DS begged me to ride again. But after riding it four times in a row, I’d had enough. We went on a few other rides (with little or no wait time) and arrived about 10 minutes before the start of the Finding Nemo show and still got seats, in fact we were practically in the front row…the best seats we’ve ever had! :thumbsup2 So we had done everything we wanted to do (and then some, in my case ) at Animal Kingdom in less than 2 ½ hours (without having to get any fastpasses, I should add :)) and now there was only one thing left for us to do…

LUNCH AT FLAME TREE BARBECUE

Background: Eating at Flame Tree was one of DS’s first requests when we began planning this trip. He had loved his meal here on our March 2006 trip, but for various reasons we had not been back to Flame Tree since then. Would the ribs and chicken live up to his 5 year old memory of them? Read on to find out. ;)

Due to a combination of light crowds in the park and an early lunch (it was only about 11:30), we were able to walk right up to the register and place our order at Flame Tree. DS ordered the same meal as he had gotten here in 2006…

FTBBQ1.jpg

Ribs and Chicken Combo served with Baked Beans and Cole Slaw

Sadly, this meal was not what he'd expected. He had wrongly remembered the chicken here to be of the boneless wings variety, so consequently was not too happy with the chicken and ate very little. But he still had high hopes for the ribs…until he tasted them. “Dry and burnt” was his minimal description of them. I had a small taste and would have to say his description was pretty accurate. He of course wouldn’t touch either the baked beans or cole slaw that came with his meal. I felt guilty about throwing them away untouched, so I tried a bite of each. My two word description…NOT GOOD. :sad2:

I ordered only a basket of onion rings here (because I wanted to have my lunch at the Food & Wine Festival), which I see that DS did not include in the one (kind of blurry) picture he took at this meal. These were actually pretty good and with quite a bit of help from DS, we ate nearly all of them…and there were a lot of onion rings in that basket!

So with the exception of the onion rings, this meal was a big disappointment…especially for DS, who had been dreaming about their ribs and chicken for more than 5 years now. On the bright side, at least we didn't have to pay full price for our food, as they gave me the 20% TIW discount. In conclusion though, I doubt that DS will be asking to go back to Flame Tree Barbecue anytime soon.

NEXT UP: Lunch #2 at the Food & Wine Festival Booths

Those muffins from BW Bakery look great...sorry they were so cold. I, too, prefer them warm or room temperature.

Here's a little tip...if the line at BW Bakery is very long, try going inside the Boardwalk Resort, to the Belle Vue Lounge. They serve a continental breakfast there, with various items from the BW Bakery. You can't get one of the egg sandwiches, but you can get a muffin or danish. I did this one morning on our last trip. I got a couple of danish, and a couple of Mickey-shaped muffins for the kids, and it was awesome! And only 1 person in front of me in line! :goodvibes

Enjoying your reviews! Can't wait to hear about Via Napoli...hmmmm, your San Angel review makes me wish I could fit it in somewhere.....

Enjoying the reviews, everything looks very yummy

Oh yes, I love the Belle Vue Lounge and usually get my morning coffee there (you can use your refillable mugs there too :)). Sometimes I get pastries there too and take them back to the room for everyone to eat while getting ready. It's very convenient and rarely ever more than a few people there. But I also like the Bakery because of the bigger selection, plus if you can get a table, having breakfast outside on the Boardwalk is a great way to start the day.

Thank you both for reading!

Yeah, I have to say that the food at Flame Tree doesn't look very appealing from that picture! Like you I would much prefer to have lunch at the F&W booths, so I can't wait to hear about that!

Part 1 of our Food & Wine Fest reviews coming up! :thumbsup2

Now on to our first day of noshing at the Food & Wine Festival and our second lunch of the day. DS and I left Animal Kingdom and returned to our room to wait for DH’s arrival from the airport. By the time he finally arrived, unpacked, and made a few business calls, DS and I were starving. (Yes, we were starving even though we had already eaten at Flame Tree). We got to Epcot by mid-afternoon and were happy to find that it was not very crowded at the Food & Wine booths. I had already bought my wristband the day before so I was armed and ready to eat and drink my way from the World Showcase entrance to the park all the way to Future World.

But before I start the reviews, here is our rating system:

 Where is the closest trash can?

 Well, that was a disappointment

:thumbsup2 Pretty good, worth a try

:cool1: Very good, just missed getting top marks

:worship: OMG so very good, one of our TOP FIVE FAVORITES of the festival!

So our first stop after entering the park was at the very first booth that we came upon…

IRELAND

Where we sampled two out of their three food offerings.

FWF1.jpg

:worship: Lobster and Scallop Fisherman’s Pie

FWF2.jpg

:cool1: Warm Chocolate Lava Cake with Bailey’s Irish Cream Ganache

These would have both made our favorites list, except that the Lava Cake was way too small…definitely not big enough for three hungry people to sample. I’m pretty sure I ended up with the short stick on this one because I only got one tiny bite of the cake before I turned it over to the guys and it was gone in the blink of an eye. So anyway, due to the size of the serving, the lava cake’s rating was downgraded.

Moving on clockwise, our next booth was…

CANADA

Where we had five out of the six things on their menu.

FWF3.jpg

:thumbsup2Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup
:cool1:Maple and Moosehead Beer Glazed Salmon with Barley Salad
:thumbsup2Chicken Chipotle Sausage with Sweet Corn Polenta
:cool1:Moosehead Beer
:cool1:Neige Premiere

All three of the foods were very good, but our favorite was the salmon. In fact, it was very close to being one of our top five favorites. Moosehead is one of DH’s favorite beers, so it was a no brainer that he would have this and enjoy it. As for the Neige Premiere, this was the first time I had ever tried apple wine and I really liked it. It was like apple cider, only better. Recently, I thought about ordering a bottle online until I saw the $40 price tag. Although, come to think of it, this actually isn’t that bad considering I paid $5.75 for a tiny glass.

Next booth on our trip around the world was…

GREECE

Where we tried three of the four foods offered.

FWF5.jpg

:thumbsup2Greek Salad with Pita Bread
:rolleyes:Griddled Greek Cheese with Pistacios and Honey
:rolleyes:Chicken Souvlaki with Tzatziki

I was quite surprised to discover that the only one of these three that I liked was the Greek Salad. I had read good reviews of their new (this year) offering, Greek Cheese, but I was not impressed with it. In fact, if my opinion mattered, they would drop this next year and bring back the tried and true Spanakopita. On the other hand, I wouldn’t be too upset if they dropped the Chicken Souvlaki, as it was not as good as I had remembered it being last year. But that’s probably never going to happen.

Our next stop was at…

DESSERTS & CHAMPAGNE

We were beginning to get full, so we got only one of the three desserts on the menu here.

FWF6.jpg

:worship:White Chocolate Macadamia Mousse with Dark Chocolate Pearls

This was so good that it made our Top 5 list!

Our last food of the afternoon came from…

HAWAII

FWF7.jpg

:thumbsup2Kalua Pork Slider with Sweet and Sour Dole Pineapple Chutney and Spicy Mayonnaise
:worship:Seven Tiki Mai Tai

We were looking forward to trying the Pork Slider as we all really like the combination of pork/ham and pineapple, but we were a little disappointed with this. It was good, just not as good as we were expecting. On the other hand, the Mai Tai was better than we were expecting and even made my top 5 favorite alcoholic beverages of the festival.

Our final drink of the afternoon came from…

CRAFT BEERS

From this booth, DH tried the Full Sail IPA (sorry, no picture), which he said was just okay.

Six Food & Wine Festival booths, ten food items, four alcoholic beverages. That is the answer to the question, “How much does it take to fill the hungry stomachs of two adults and one teenage boy?” Shoot, I was hoping to get to at least 10 booths and have at least 15 foods on this first visit of the three I had planned! I told my guys that on our next visit to the Festival we would have to step up our game. Their simultaneous response was something like this…

Since it was nearly 5:00 by the time we’d completed our feeding frenzy the next question was, “Would we be hungry enough to eat again at our 8:30 dinner at Via Napoli?” Stay tuned to find out.

OUR TRIP TOTALS - STEAKS 2, CAKES 1

NEXT UP: Dinner at Via Napoli???

Just joining in and I wanted to let you know that I love the grading system and am really enjoying the pictures and the reviews! I never had a chance to enjoy the festival but hopefully one day we can go (maybe when the kids are older). In the meantime I can live vicariously through your experiences!

Wow, I love all of the food and wine goodies! That apple wine from Canada sounds really tasty. I'd also love to try that chocolate lava cake!

Yummy reviews. I love San Angel Inn too! We tried La Hacienda de San Angel on our last trip and loved it!

loving your reviews - great format. We loved the F&W festival. I chickened out of an avocado margerita - not sure if I would like it and I loved the festival margarita and the strawberry and lime so stuck to that :) Looking forward to more,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
