Let the parents fight over school supplies start....

Yeah the air freshners and the clorox seemed a bit much to me too. Why are the teachers asking kids to bring things like this anyway? You go to school to learn and if your classroom doesn't smell like Pine Fresh, so what?

No kidding! If my son's teacher insisted on air fresheners, I'd give her a list of all the Dollar stores in the area!

The lists the schools send home annoy me to no end. If they want to "require" the kids to have a certain item, the school or teacher should supply it. Otherwise, as long as a kid has paper, pen, pencil, binder (or equivalent), it shouldn't make a difference.

In my experience, the "blue" folder always ends up holding stuff that belongs in the "yellow" folder anyway.

The problem with my way of thinking, of course, is that when all the OTHER kids have the items on the list down to a "t", and a couple kids don't, they get picked on.

I love my daughter's school (sarcasm dripping from my voice). They sent her class assignment, supply list and notification of the Open House on the Wedensday before school started. And yep, the Open Houses started that Wednesday night. We went to the open house and were told by her teacher that she only needed certain things on the list.

As for the PTA making packs, that's fine. However, I would like my PTA to make sure the student's are getting the education they need. And pushing back on the administrator's that are changing the standards for children EVERY YEAR.

Ex. My daughter left the 2nd grade writing one paragraph about one subject. We went to the 3rd grade curiculum meeting - by Christmas they have to write a story with 3 different paragraphs, each with one main idea and 2 supporting facts. WHAT?!? Talk about a jump.

Sorry for the rant on PTA.

Back to the supply issue. They should NEVER penalize a student for missing supplies. It could be for any reason, parents, couldn't find them or whatever.
I swear - kids today never get the chance to just be kids without adult responsibilites.

Well, I just got back from school supply shopping at Target. It was virtually painless.

Filler paper - $.67 (bought 3 packs)

10-pack of one-subject notebooks - $1.50 (bought 2 10-packs)

Five-star zippered binder - $4.88

Plastic dividers - $1.50

Retractable pens (box of 50) - $4.99 (most expensive item)

Pencils - 2 boxes of 24 - $1.00 (I bought 4 boxes)

Pencil erasers - $.74

Rectangular eraser - $.29

If they want him to have anything else, they can supply it.
