Lesli's Live Long and Strong WISH Journal

Hope you had a good, productive and relaxing time at the Trade Show!

Have a good week! or what's left of it!

Hi,

I just wanted to drop by and say hi! I've been thinking about you lately and I hope all is well with you and your family and that business is going well.

Take care of yourself! Have a great day! :goodvibes

Just dropping by to say I'm thinking about you!

Did you get any of those horrid storms I've been hearing about near Springfield? I hope not!

Hope all is well.

I know that I have been gone so long but the good news is that I am still here.

A car accident Feb 22 changed my life for awhile and in some ways maybe forever. At the moment I am writing to you from a nursing home, at my age this is tough, but hopefully I will be home in a week.

On my way back from the trade show (which was fun and staying at the Marriot was great), I was 5 miles from home and I was tired and unconsciously closed my eyes while driving. It wasn't long, but long enough. I ended up crossing over to the left, went off the road, and hit a utility pole (actually split it off at the base) . The good news was that I was able to steer away some and divert the path of impact even though it was head on. I did no lose unconsciousness (hard to fight, but I did it). Help arrived quickly, airbags worked, safety glass stayed intact. I had severe injuries and was taken to the nearest trauma hospital. From there, I was life flighted to Peoria where a larger trauma hospital exists.

After many x-rays, many units of blood, and emergency surgery on my right leg and right arm, and a lot of morphine, things calmed down for a bit. Then it was back to surgery on my left leg on Feb 23. That had 2 breaks in the femour and the put in a rod, pin, and nail. It felt 100% better.

On Feb 27, I had surgery on the right leg and arm again. These were open breaks and were the worst. Both bones in the right forearm have a plate and screws. The right shoulder is broke but will heal on its own. The right leg, the femour was shattered down by the knee and under. The best they could do was take out bone and wait for a knee replacement in a few months.

I spent 17 days in the hospital and have been here in the nursing home since Mar 10. I am not able to bear weight on any extremity except my left arm. Transporting me 100 miles back towards home became a big issue with insurance and required me to change drs, something I don't want to do between surgeries. Tomorrow, I go back to the dr and with luck he will give me permission to put some weight on my left leg so that transferring to a wheelchair is much easier (not to mention the bathroom).

For the most part, I kept up a positive attitude (even when the trauma unit was working on me). Some days have been hard, but I am lucky. I didn't have any head, spinal, or internal injuries. Thank God for a large vehicle.

My mother quit her job and moved into our home just a few days after the accident. It is a good thing. She has helped to pick up the slack at home, with the kids, with the new store, and with my care. My family is hanging tough and my sister is also planning to stay with us for awhile once I am home. The churches in town have poured out to provide meals for my family and help in many ways. Very overwhelming, but such a blessing. DH would have gone nuts if wasn't for the extra help.

I am taking each day as it comes and W.I.S.H. has a whole new meaning for me. It is no longer just about weight loss, although I have probably lost 20 lbs. in the last month. I do not recommend the hospital as a form of diet. ;)

I hope all of you are well. I will get back as soon as I can. It takes so long to type with one hand, so forgive my typo's.

Take care. (pretend 2 Mickey's here)

Lesli, I was so sorry to read what happened to you. What a horrible accident. Its terrifying how quickly our lives can change. Are you getting rehab at the nursing facility? Its good to hear that you have a support system in place with your churches. Please know that I'm praying for you and your family. pixiedust:

Lesli, I am SO thankful you are healing!! I am praying for you! And your family.

Try to be patient as you heal and take good care of yourself.

Good Morning, Lesli!

Hope you're a bit better today!

Are you old enough to remember the 'six million $ man/woman' TV series'?

When I had my ankle rebuilt - 1975 - I had only a 50% chance of ever walking normal again (and I was 16 - OUCH!!) My mantra was from those shows - Better, Stronger, Faster! You can be too, just take it one step at a time!!! Plus, remember bones heal to be stronger than they were before.

If nothing else, you will, like me, have fun going through some airport security!

Hang in there! You're in my prayers!

Good morning!

Just stopping by to send you some good thoughts! :goodvibes

I hope today is a great day!

Hope today was a bit better! I'm praying you'll get to go home soon!

Hi!

I hope today was a brighter day for you! Sending lots of :wizard: for healing and progress!

:sunny:

Happy Saturday! :sunny:

I hope you're feeling well and getting up and around more. I think we got winter's last stand last night--hopefully all the snow will have melted by the time they spring you.

DH and I are running away tomorrow, so I won't be back until Tuesday night. You'll definitely be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope everything goes well!

:wizard:

Good Morning, Lesli!
I'm hoping and Praying that you will soon get good news and get to go home.

I know you will feel better just getting back to your own surroundings with your family around you.

Well, I get to go home on Monday and I can't wait!

Good news! They took my cast off my right forearm and now I have a customized splint, which I can take off so I can wash my arm and a few times a day I can take it off to move my wrist and hand around. Even with it on I can use it more to type and write. Not great, but everything is progress.

I have stood on my left leg a few times in physical therapy! It didn't hurt, but what is hard is the extra effort that it takes to get to a standing position and stay there for a few seconds. It is unreal. You have to literally tell your foot to push through the floor and tell yor knee to lock and so on. But it is getting there.

I am also able to now move from one location to another by partly standing on my left leg and with the assistance of others lifting me, but it is progress. Before, I had to have people pull me across a board on a sheet.

EAch day is a healthier me and I know that going home will really play big in my mental health.

Thanks for all of the encouragement that you are all giving me. Take care.

Lesli, I'm so glad you're getting to go home! I bet you can't wait. Let us know how everything goes. You're in my prayers! :sunny:

Welcome home, Lesli!!!

I hope everything went well with the big move. I can't wait to hear how you're settling in back in more familiar environs.

Sending lots of :wizard: your way!!!

Hi! Sending :sunny: and :wizard: your way for a great day. It's supposed to be nice and warm today. Hopefully that mean that winter's finally on its way out!

I hope you feel better today!

Good morning!

Just thinking of you and sending you :goodvibes for a great day!

Hi!

Just stopping by to wish you a great day! :goodvibes

What a wild night last night! Did you get all those storms?

Finally back! I cannot say how great it is to be home!

Last week was full of evaluations with home health and therapy, as well as try to establish new routines, and dealing with the emotions of it all.

I have so far exceed the expectations of me sis (a CNA), did that last week, so she was able to go home knowing that I would be a little less work for my family. Now DH, my mom, and DD16 are tag teaming.

This week, I was dropped from home therapy because I "have progressed so quickly and there is little that can be done until I can do out patient". Frustrating, but good.

Yesterday and today for the first time, I was really able to get some work done and it felt great! I was able to go to bed with a clearer mind. Of course, cutting back on pain meds helps.

There is so much to catch up on between the two businesses, home, taxes, and all. One step at a time.

You really do get better faster at home. Good food, conversation, teenage problems, and anything else to occupy the mind. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Time to get going. Thanks for checking in on me. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo
