Lent - Whatcha giving up?

cursing...every time I slip, I put a quarter in the swear jar....last year I got my whole office into it and we ended up putting $27.75 in the poor box at church (sometimes, you just got to anti-up and let it fly!)

Hey! What a good idea....might end up with a few more pennies for our trip to Maine! LOL!!

If I put a quarter in a jar every time I swear, we could add on a small DVC contract! :rolleyes1

i am giving up eating between meals and i have to excersize at least 15 min. a day...... how many of you can have or do what ever you give up on sun.?? thats what i grew up with ...... like if i gave up ice cream i could only have it on sun. not sure if thats true or not but thats what i was taught.... vicki

Our Priest reminded us of that rule today! Sundays are always free of fast and abstinence because on Sunday we celebrate the Resurrection-even during Lent.

I actually love Lent, it's my favorite season. The reminder to sacrifice is helpful to me. It's kind of like getting ready for Spring.

Swearing, the same thing I've given up every year for the past several. I need to find something else, too, though because it's hard to answer the 'what are you giving up' question posed by your grandparents as 'swearing'. I need my 'cover up' lenten sacrifice.

Thats the way we do it too. The year DH gave up all sugar and desserts it was the only way i made it through. I looked forward to a bowl of ice cream on Sunday all week.

I love lent too. Giving up a pleasure or fasting and replacing it with prayer always gets me ready for Easter, to truly appreciate the Lords sacrafice. Our priest reminded us that my replacing a food we love, or a meal with prayer we gain a hunger for time spent with God. I thought that summed it up nicely.

What's Pancake Day? Is it like Fasnacht day?

Pancake day is the Tuesday before lent (Shrove Tuesday). I think it's mainly a UK thing but we eat pancakes!

Not American pancakes though - thin, crepe-style pancakes. Made with egg, flour and milk. Pour the batter into a pan, cook, flip, cook, eat!

We eat them with mainly things like lemon or orange juice with sugar; golden syrup (a much sweeter, thicker syrup than maple syrup - thicker than honey); ice cream; chocolate spread; banana; cheese...anything you fancy really. My personal favorite is banana and golden syrup.

They look more like this:

And they taste LOVELY!!!

I never knew about the Sunday thing - is that true? Can I actually eat chocolate on Sunday?

Jenny:)

Oh, that does sound good! I may have to adopt that tradition here (of course, DH loves fasnacht, too, so we'll be completely stuffed, lol!)

Do you have a recipe for the style of pancakes you make? I'd love to try making them. :)

That's what I was always told. Sunday is a day of rest and celebration. Ask your priest or minister if your not sure.

My reciepe (although google pancake day for more) is to shove three eggs and a bunch of flour into a bowl. Add milk. Whisk. If it's too thick, add more milk. If it's too milky, add more flour. It wants to be a batter - so thick, and runny.

Heat a pan up mega-hot with some butter in it, and then add a small cup of batter. These pancakes won't rise and are supposed to be thin. Half way through, flip.

Eat with syrups, chocolate, ice cream, banana, sugar, lemon juice...anything you fancy.

Many of the churches around here offer "Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers" so I didn't realize it was a UK thing. Our priest said it's the same thing as Mardi Gras - Fat Tuesday - cook all the lard and fattening stuff in your house to prepare for sacrifice of Lent.

It's common in my church to give up something for Lent but also add something during Lent. I'm giving up Starbucks and adding daily exercise. I'll be glad to see Sunday come every week. Tomorrow I'll be having a Venti Starbucks with my pancakes!!

Thanks! That's how I cook quite often as well...add a handful of this, throw in some of that, etc. My best fetuccini alfredo recipe is this way.

I also make an awesome English bread-and-butter pudding if you want the randomized-throw-it-in-hope-for-the-best recipe :thumbsup2
