I need help in selecting a zoom lens for my Rebel Xs. I have about $300 max to spend. I understand the limitations this imposes but that is what I have to work with. I am not expecting L quality, just looking for the best of those available for the price. The kit lens is 18-55. I borrowed a Tamron 75-300 for our disney trip last December and it was pretty good. I am looking at the 200-300mm for the upper range. I read many reviews of the ones in this price range but none stood out above the others so I figured I would give you guys(gals) a try. One of the ones I was considering was Canon's EF-S 25-250 IS. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend getting a slower telephoto without IS, so in your price range I think you've already found your best option in the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS.

By their very nature, most lenses that start very wide and go very long (over 200mm) tend to be mediocre quality. It's just too much zoom. Note that you never see any "high end" lenses with that kind of range.

That being said, I've heard a lot of good things about the Tamron 18-250mm, but that may be out of your price range - I'm not sure what it sells for off the top of my head.

I would lean towards a good that starts at a higher focal length - something closer to the 70-300 that you rented.
