Lens hood ?

I'm looking to buy a lens hood for one of my lens. What I'd like to know is there any difference between a standard full hood and what I'll call the newer hoods that have parts of the sides cut out of them the ones? Just curious if there is any difference to your photos with one or the other. Thanks

Yes. The petal hoods have sections cut out to help prevent vignetting at wider focal lengths.
