Lens Hood Questions

Does anybody else have the problem of the hood showing up in their pics when they use a wide angle lens. I do whenever I use it on my 18-70 lens. I can see dark areas on the edge of the pic when I take it at 18mm. Drives me nuts, because I do like to use a lens hood. And 18mm is not that wide.....

is that the hood that came with the lens....that's odd, usually hoods for newer zoom lenses are the petal type and are sized for all lengths..

on mine the one set of petals ar smaller to accomodate wide angle..

Granted, I'm not into the fancier lenses just yet, but my 55-200mm VR lens came with a regular round hood. The 18-55 didn't come with one at all :confused3 If I don't see the hood in any pictures, would there be any advantages in investing in a petal style or would it be a waste of money?

if it's not showing up in pictures, round is just fine

Thanks for starting this thread NateandLogansDad! I have been on the fence whether or not I should get hoods for my lenses before our WDW trip. Now I definately will, if for no other reason than protection from the kids and the crowds. I know what you mean about the kiddos grabbing the camera. My DS2 picked mine up the other day by the onboard flash. I didn't want to scream too loud and make him drop the whole thing! :scared1: Rule #1: NO ONE touches Mommy's camera! Not even Daddy, he has no idea what he's doing :sad2: He always switches it to auto. That's why I kept the old P&S!

I took the boys fishing today cause mommy has school work to do. While out on the pier I kept my bag away from everybody and would grab the camera out for a minute here and there just to get a shot or 30 of the kids catching fish and playing around. I was trying to get my DS5's hook back from a stubborn catfish when I notice that my DS3 is about 20 ft away trying to unzip my bag. That fish still has a headache from when I dropped it and ran in slow motion yelling NOOOOOO!!!! It's funny, I bought the camera mainly to preserve memories with them, but they are the 2 main people I don't want near it. :lmao: (b/t/w the camera never made it out of the bag  )

Canon and Nikon do not include a hood with the kit lens. Just one of the reasons people say that their kit lenses are not as good as the other brands. This is not an insult to C&N as they do that on purpose. They give you a cheap lens that is decent optically, but it leaves you wanting to upgrade.

Only Canon's L lenses come with a hood unfortunately. One of the few things I don't like about Canon.

I don't have that problem with the petal hood that came with my 18-135mm lens. If the hood is put on wrong I can see the hood at 18mm. Is yours a petal hood?

Yes it's the one that came with the lens...
That's really strange - the correct lens hood should never show in the photos, it should be designed that so that it never shows. I would maybe do a little Googling to make sure that you're not the only one having this issue - if you are, it might be worth contacting Nikon to see if they're something wrong, like you got the wrong hood somehow.

For "protection" stories - a couple WDW trips ago, my son unclicked the quick-release on my Op/Tech strap while I was holding him. Fortunately the strap was between us so it fell fairly slowly, but it still came down and landed on a metal screw-on hood that I was using for the big macro lens that I had mounted. No damage done! Phew!

Dave, it looks like you should have the HB-32 petal hood. Thats what came with my 18-135mm lens.

Well I looked into it and found out what I was doing wrong. I do have the HB-32 but discovered that mine for some reason is very hard to lock into place. So probably assuming it was on properly I would start shooting and it would turn slightly through use thus it showing up in my pics. I got so frustrated with it I did not use for months. Now thinking the problem may be solved I will go back to trying it again.

Thanks everybody!! :thumbsup2

Well, after reading this thread, I pulled my hoods out of the storage closet, and mounted each one onto it's respective lens.

Two things changed my mind:

1. I am no longer using my Crumpler 4 mil home, and that bag did not allow any room for a lens hood.

2. The idea of protection came home to roost the other day when I was trying out my BlackRapid strap and as I was leaning over something, the camera kind of zipped around towards my front, and banged the side of the front of the lens on a car. The car was fine, but the front ring of my Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L lens now has a little scuff.

So, now that I no longer have the issue of too little space in the bag (as I'm using the BR strap instead -- way more convenient), I'm going with hoods for protection and prevention of flare.

Regards,

Boris

oddly enough i think my 28-135 came with a hood so no rhyme or reason as to what comes with or without.:)

sometimes i use them sometimes i don't. now that i have some better low light lenses and more noiseless iso i'm trying to get back in the habit. before sometimes they cut out to much light so i was constantly putting on taking off anytime i walked under shade or something which was very annoying so often it was easier to leave them in the bag.
