In my household we don't use all the buns in the package right away. I have frozen them in the past, but they seem freezer burnt when I use them again. (Yes, I know I may need to protect them better when they are placed in the freezer. ;) )

Ok, so this may sound like a silly request, but I was wondering if anyone had any creative ideas to use up the buns? Other than sandwiches, of course!

Thanks in advance for anyone's input.

garlic toast
croutons
breakfast casseroles
bread pudding

Found this online:
BUN PUDDING

1 bag (8-count) hot dog buns, torn into pieces
4 1/2 cups whole milk (substitute part half-and-half for richer pudding)
3 eggs
1 cup sugar (or less)
1 tablespoon orange liqueur or vanilla
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans
whipped cream or ice cream (optional, for serving)

Place torn pieces of bread in large bowl. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into a greased 13x9-inch baking dish.

Bake at 350 degrees about 50 minutes, or until top is golden brown and puffed (it will "fall" upon cooling).

Remove from oven and serve with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.

well..i got this idea from a fellower dis'r..my ds4 is autistic and has HUGE food issues...I tried this with him and he absolutely every bite! DD6 also enjoyed it as well.

I take a hot dog bun and spread Nutella on the bottom put a peeled banana in it...then spread some peanut butter on top of the banana. :)

I have also used my hot dog rolls for garlic toast as the pp mentioned...you could also season them, toast them then cut them up to make croutons.
I have toasted them and then thrown them in the food processer and added them to my homemade breadcrumbs bag in the freezer.
I also love spreading a little butter on them, toasting them up and then filling them with tuna salad, egg salad or crab meat salad. :thumbsup2

We butter hot dog buns, add some cheese-any kind you like, and then broil them. The cheese melts, and the rest of the bun gets toasty. It's kind of like a grilled cheese, but it's different. I actually prefer it this way. You can also sprinkle some seasoning on top if you like-paprika, parsley, oregano, etc.

Use them for shrimp, crab, tuna or egg salad.
Crumble them up to make fresh breadcrumbs
Or my kid's favorite...make toast.

You can use the "fat" side to make stuffed french toast. Most of the time our buns have one side might thicker than the other, but if they're evenly split, all the better! Just stuff some fruit (blueberries, strawberries, banana, etc) in the slit & make regular french toast. Yum!

Thanks soo much for the ideas! Now, I know what to do with the leftover Nutella too! Not sure why I didn't think of the grilled cheese idea, but it is great. My 4yr old DS is a picky eater, but loves grilled cheese sandwiches.

I think I am going to try to make the Bun Pudding on the 4th of July when people aren't as concerned about fat and/or calories. It looks delicious, but did you see how much fat is in that thing? :faint:

Anyway, thanks again for helping me stretch my dollars and feed my family fun food!

We make pizza buns out of our leftover hamburg and hotdog rolls.
Just spread with sauce and add toppings of your choice and put in the oven or toaster oven. Quick and yummy!

Another place our orphan buns end up is in meatloaf. You can make them into breadcrumbs, or just tear them apart and soak them in the liquid part of your recipe for a few minutes.

Butter them and sprinkle on cinnamon sugar then put them under the broiler UMMM!

Butter, parmesan cheese (the stuff in the can), broil. It was a favorite of mine growing up and my kids love them too. While I usually do it with leftover, freezer burned buns, I admit to buying them specifically for this purpose occasionally!

Cheese Strata

6 cups cubed bread- put in a sprayed casserole dish
Mix- 1 can of cheddar cheese soup
6 ounces of shredded Swiss cheese
4 beaten eggs
1 cup of milk

Pour over bread; cover and let sit in refrigerator overnight. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes.

I've substitued all kinds of bread and/or cheese in this. Company always asks for the leftovers to take home!:)

My boss just used some leftover hot dog buns in his crabcake recipe!
