Right guys, I feel super silly even posting this... but I'm confused!

I'm trying to place my garden grocer order, but milk has completely thrown me. 1%, 2%, low fat, reduced fat, no fat, milk with vitamin D... etc etc etc!

Is it okay to just get store brand? I'm guessing that's the equivalent of Tesco milk, for example? Any idea what skimmed and semi-skimmed milk would be called in the US?

HELP!

I think skimmed milk is 1% or thereabouts, just vaguely recall from food shopping yesterday! :)

Does this mean you can get proper milk in the US then? or does it still taste funny compared to our milk? Can't stand the milk you get in Europe, always makes my cup of tea taste funny too which is never good! :sad2:

From Wikipedia

In the UK, milk is marketed and labelled as follows:

Whole milk is about 4% fat (Also called 'Blue top')
Semi skimmed milk is 1.7% fat (Also called 'Green top')
1% Fat Milk (Also called 'Orange top')
Skimmed milk is between 0.1-0.3% fat (Also called 'Red top')

In the USA, milk is marketed primarily by fat content and available in these varieties:

Whole Milk is 3.25% fat
2% Reduced-Fat Milk
1% Lowfat Milk (also called Light Milk)
0% Fat-Free Milk (also called Skim Milk or Nonfat Milk)

We always go own brand no problems.

definitely does not taste like the milk in Europe (that's sterilised)..I absolutely LOVE that stuff by the way...its tastes the same as UK milk.:)

Nothing to add, others have answered in full, just wanted to say your post made me smile :goodvibes, I was in exactly the same quandry, stood in the shop very confused:confused3

I ended up getting the 2% because it was the 'middle' one and at the time we used to have semi-skimmed-only learnt I got it right when we got home. Yes the milk is as nice as ours, had in tea and on cereal
