Left lane drivers!

So for now I will continue to drive in the left lane on 95, 695, 295 and all other major roads.

Sorry to hear that. One of the major problems with the roads you mentioned is people hanging out in the left lane. It is just common sense to get out of the way and stay in the slower lanes.

I agree if you're going slow you should be moving over into the slower lanes but the slower lanes are abit too slow for me. ;) So if I moved over to them I'd be constantly changing lanes back and forth. I think it's alot safer for me to stay in the left hand lane and not weave in and out of traffic. When I'm in the left hand lane I'm usually going about 10-15 MPH(sometimes more) over the speed limit and not delaying traffic.

I agree. On a freeway like I270, especially the part that is 2 lanes each direction, as long as I am not holding up traffic I am in the left lane. If a faster moving vehicle approaches I get over. Or if the right lane is flowing fine I'll be there, but often there are slower moving trucks and with the hills they do slow often. If everyone was crammed in the right lane, the already horrible traffic would be even worse.

It's a little different when there are 3 lanes to work with. Then I hang out in the middle lane, as long as I am going the flow of traffic. The right is for slower moving traffic and merging off and on the freeway. The left then is used more for passing and for traffic that is going a lot faster. But so often the traffic is so bad it's a moot point.

I believe too that they recently passed a law that you can now get a ticket if in the left lane and not passing.

I was thinking about this and I remembered there was a law that was debated in 2003. It was defeated but here is what was being considered:

"HB 73 that would have required a driver in the far left lane of a road with 2 or more lanes moving in the same direction to yield the left lane to faster moving vehicles, when it is safe and practicable to do so. The measure would not have applied to a vehicle preparing for a left turn or a vehicle in a high occupancy vehicle lane."

I remember people saying that this would mean that someone going 55 in a 55 MPH zone would be ticketed for not yeilding the right of way to someone going 65 in the left lane of a 55 MPH zone.

Personally I would have loved to see this law passed. It would prevent the 55 MPH vigilanties who like to hang out in the fast lane.

This thread is great. I live right on the NJ/PA/NY border (actually in NJ) so I get to see all the action.

There is a sign as soon as you cross the bride from PA to NJ that reads "Keep Right Except To Pass", I personally believe that sign was put there for a reason, all the PA drivers just hang out in the left lane. The NY drivers aren't as bad with this issue around here.

Ahh, PA drivers :moped:

Agreed. Often I'll be in the left lane speeding keeping up with the rest of the speeders, passing those that are significantly slower in the right lane. Along comes the super-speeder. If I get into the right lane, I literally have to stand on the brakes to slow down to fit in with the slower moving trucks. Often the speed difference between the right lane and the left lane is huge and makes for a riskier situation than if I just continued passing cars in the left lane at the over-the-limit speed I'm already going at. Its the super-speeders that we're all trying to accomodate. How much over-the-limit speeding enough?

SEE! It's NOT just me! :rotfl2:

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I don't care how fast the car in front of me in the left lane THINKS they are going. If they are not passing anyone and I come up behind them they need to move it over to the right.

::yes:: You are passing people and doing the right thing by passing them in the left lane.

Sorry... I have to chime in here...

All of us PA'ers really know the that the real problem is not 'left-lane' drivers, it's the Tractor Trailer drivers! I live near Interstate 81, and almost daily there is an accident involving a tractor trailer! I have witnessed many, and more often than not, the truck is at fault. They think they own the road, and have the right to control the speed and use of both lanes. I fear truck drivers worse than the impatient speeder. I try to accomodate the speeders, and move over, and smile when the state police pull them over. I know all the speed traps on 81! :rotfl: ;)

Ahhhh - you must be pretty darn close to me - I am about 20 minutes south of the NY border and 20 minutes east of the PA border :)

The PA drivers on Rt 80 drive me BONKERS :) It's not about being late or being in a rush - they just don't keep up with traffic!
