We are planning a family trip to Disney in November. My dad suffered a stroke that affected his right hand. The good thing that about this is that my dad is left handed. He can walk but it is hard for him to do it for extended periods of time. We discovered by trial the other day that the ECV forward control is on the right side. It makes it rather difficult for my dad to use one.

Is there an ECV that we can rent that has a neutral type of control?

I don't know of any off-site rentals that will do this. Sometimes I will drive with my left hand and just push the left-side lever forward instead of pull the right side lever toward me.

I think that the Disney rentals have a forward-reverse switch and pulling either side lever toward you will have the ECV move in the direction the switch is set.

If you are thinking of renting an ECV only in the parks, they have a dual control. I just rented in the MK this past Sunday was was able to get on/off from either side and you could control movement from either side of the handle.
I don't know if offsite vendors offer units with dual controls.

My dad switched up hands often, he would just pull back on the left side lever to go forward instead of push on the right side.

Most ECVs can be driven with either hand. You just have to see which way is forward -- then the opposite way is back. EX: push forward/pull reverse

They have controls on both sides.

Thanks. That is really helpful. I am going to take a quick trip down there in October and check out a couple of the ECV's. He has congestive heart failure as well so I don't want to push him too much but this trip is exactly what he needs to make him feel better.

You guys are so helpful. I have never considered doing Disney with someone with my Dad's health issues but I really want him to enjoy this trip without having too many set backs.

If the ECV you rent has a Delta tiller - it is much easier to use one hand. It is shaped like an oval. The controls are manipulated with your hand rather than thumbs. I have this kind of tiller. I drive the ECV in parades with one hand. Your Dad will love it. It makes things so much easier.

I know that Gogo has a Delta tiller on their newer models. I have a Golden Buzzaround Lite which also has this tiller.

Good luck to you. I hope you find this type from one of the rental places. It will make things sooooooo much easier for him! :goodvibes
