I'm really having trouble deciding what to do with my rental car.

My new wife and I are not new to dis and have gone to WDW every year for the past five years. However, I have always booked in May because a) at that time my wife wasn't a teacher and b) because I love Orlando and WDW in May (less crowds, good weather, no rain).

But as I stated earlier, my wife now teaches junior high and we are stuck trying to come in August. That means, I am now unprepared for how busy it actually gets and have been reading various posts on disboards for some idea. While we are prepared for the rain and the crowds, I'm most concerned about the driving.

In May, driving around Orlando is no busier than at home, but just how bad is it in August?

Also, I was wondering if someone could help me make a decision. We will have a rental for our week in the timeshare, but once we leave our timeshare we are spending three nights at SSR. Should I keep the car for those days on the resort or just stick to Disney Transportation? I have heard things both ways, but overall the suggestion was to keep the car for convenience. However, if I am going to be frustrated driving in huge lines with a bunch of unfamiliar holiday drivers, I don't think I want to stress myself out. What do you folks think?

Hi Joshua

I have only been once in Aug
and it was about five years ago,,,,HOT.. so if the car has A/C I'd probably keep it. I hear different things all the time about Transportation to and from SSR so I'm come to believe it's a flip of the coin. Although taking a nice boat ride from SSR to Downtown Disney sounds rather refreshing. Personally I've never driven a car in Orlando so I have to rely on Disney Transportation ---even with a GPS I'd probably get lost,,,HUGS and Have a Great Time!!!

Hi Joshua,

Just got back last Wednesday. Here is my thoughts:
We really questioned about getting a rental car down in Florida, and chose not to.
1. Price
2. Gas prices
3. We used the Dis transportation buses everywhere, they are very nice and not having to drive in unfamiliar territory is a big bonus AND there were lots and lots of times there either was just us 4, or one more family
4. The AC is already on, so after spending hours in HOT weather, nice to get on a cool bus.

Hope this helps...

We have been twice in August. The traffic is nothing to be concerned about at all. We have rented vehciles each time. We rent a vehicle. Personally, I love having my own vehicle. I like being able to come and go from Dowtown Disney, and the park or even go off site if we want. I would say just keep the vehicle. We have friends that love the disney transportation and use it each year. It is just a personal preference. I would think it would be easier to just return the vehcile at the end of your vacation rather than have to get from the timeshare to the car rental place and arrange transportation to the resort and than the resort back to the airport. Either way, have a fantastic trip. We leave in 3 weeks. :cheer2:
