Hi Everyone,

I am brand new to this board and feel like the only person in the entire WORLD who has done absolutely NO planning for our upcoming Wish trip. I'm hoping to learn as much as I can in the next 10 days!

Let me tell you about us. I am Sara, my husband is Jon, our wish child is Robin, age 6, and her little brother, Henry. Robin was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) on June 10, 2008 at age 3. She had a boil on her knee that became infected. While getting that cleaned out and following up with her pediatrician, we all agreed that she looked pale. A blood draw revealed that her hemoglobin was critically low and I made a mad dash to Cincinnati Children's Hospital with her infant brother in tow. Thankfully, she was an early rapid responder and in remission 13 days after diagnosis. We stayed inpatient for 27 days and then went through 2 1/2 years of near-daily chemotherapy. She ended treatment 1 week prior to starting Kindergarten in August 2010. She is doing amazingly well and astounds me with her smarts, courage, and spunk every day.

We were given the MAW paperwork while inpatient but it was just too much for us to comprehend. We decided to wait until she was off treatment. So we submitted the papers in July 2010, were visited by the volunteers in January 2011, and learned at the end of March that we would be going to Disney on May 2! This will be the first trip to Disney for all of us!

Robin is most interested in the water parks. I know she will love Magic Kingdom too. Neither kid is that into characters, as we are pretty strict about TV. I have never really dreamed of going to Disney, which explains why I haven't planned anything. I am hoping that we can wing it. Character meals, etc. don't interest us much. We just want to go with the flow and have fun and see what unfolds. Like I said, I feel like the only person who has ever done that!

Robin does not know about the trip yet. The volunteers are coming tomorrow with the news! We're so excited to tell her. This is a trip that we would never have been able to do on our own. And, this will be our first ever vacation that doesn't involved traveling to visit family. I am so excited to just escape and relax with my family. It has been a long 3 years and I am ready to unwind.

Any advice or must-do activities for a 6 and 3-year-old would be appreciated. I look forward to reading more on the boards and learning from you.

Sara

Welcome to the group :lovestruc
Do you get to stay at Give Kids the World?
You will love GKTW if you are staying there.
My best advice is go with the flow and stop to smell the roses.
