Ugh! I haven't even packed. This whole H1N1 thing has me so scared that I don't even want to go. My kids haven't had it but they said on the news last night it's spreading like wildfire in our area. We should be able to get our vax tomorrow but ds has a field trip and I was supposed to go on the field trip. The clinic starts the same time as the field trip, and now I'm reading that people were turned away at clinics that opened yesterday about an hour and a half after clinics opened and they still had to wait hours to get their shots. I had thought I'd pull the kids out of school after the field trip but now I think we're better go early. Ds will be thoroughly ticked at me to miss the trip to the pet store. The vax won't protect them completely because we leave in a week and the way it's starting to go around here I'm grateful every morning that they don't wake up with it. To top it off dd has asthma and now two kids have died in Ontario in just days and the articles say they had mild symptoms then hours later were dead. I wish we could just cancel at this point. My dh is the type who is ultracomplacent and says, 'it's just the flu', 'we'll be fine' and seems to not get that it's not the same as a cold and you can't just go on with your vacation as usual if you get it.:sad2:

I know it's not easy, being battered on all sides, being told that this big scary thing does/doesn't exist, that things are/aren't effective, that there isn't/is something to do. All the while having to parse and evaluate the semi-informed rantings of the doctors, the media, the government, the anti-science crowd, and the naturally ornery and contrarian.

I wont advise you on wether or not to go, however. I don't do advice. Just remember that the numbers favour you, medical science favours you, and your own common sense favours you, whatever you decide to do. That should help with your fear.

I work in health care.

Is this something to be concerned about....yes but concerned not scared. Please keep in mind that the regular seasonal flu kills approx 3500 Canadians every year. I have no idea what the current number of deaths in Canada from H1N1 is but it's a few hundred. So there is a huge difference and until recently all but a handfull of those deaths were not a direct result of H1N1.

Your best line of defence is proper hand washing and a strong immune system. Boost your immune system with excercise and good diet along with some suppliments like garlic, ginger and Vit C.

We aren't going until December but I'm going to try my darn best to get the entire family to wear masks on the plane rides, hand sanitizer and wipes have become our best friend. I am third day into the flu right now, just starting to climb out of the abyss (it comes and goes) and am determined to do my best to avoid it for all in the future.

Okay, feeling better now that we got the vax. We won't be fully protected on our trip but our bodies are already making antibodies. My big fear was dd (an asthmatic) coming down with it full-force while on our trip. I bought health insurance but I'd rather it be something we never have to use.

I reaD a really good email on what to do to prevent the flu virus - you could give your kids extra Vitamin C and have them gargle with salt water or Listerine twice each day. Apparently this will help in fighting the germs in addition to washing their hands. It's all in the preventative measures we take.

Have a wonderful Cali trip! We love Disneyland - even more than WDW!

Already on the vitamins, handwashing, gargling and nasal cleaning with saltwater thingy. Don't know if Dr. Oz is right about those things but they cost very little and are worth a try.

I know exactly how you feel. We got our shots today, so I feel like I can finally get excited!
Now I just pray that we dont get it in the next few days, as a few of my friends tested positive for it!

The shots hurt the arm though!

I'm waiting for my test results to come back, I'm starting to feel better so I'm hoping for a positive result. Supposedly that means I'm protected forever for future strains of the H1N1 and obviously won't have to attend the brutal line ups for the vaccination. Hope everyone's trip is safe and healthy!

I just got that email with Dr. Oz's tips today....I'm going to start using the salt water tonight!

We're leaving in 6 days for our first ever adult only trip. It'd be one thing if I were not feeling well but how do I leave my kids with my sister if one of them is sick? My 15 has a non-confirmed case now but it's definitely the flu. H1N1 or not, if my child is sick, our friends will go without us. Boohoo....

We might not be going, my fears were well-founded. :sad1: Ds woke up this morning saying his tummy hurts. He's warm but only 38C which is just at the threashold of fever. We were supposed to go tomorrow. Waiting to see if the doctor can see us to find out what he thinks but there's an excellent chance of no Disneyland.

Oh no! That would be terrible!

Just talked to the doctor's office and they are not seeing any patients with flu-like symptoms and sending those w/ high risk and complications straight to hospital. But the nurse asked me his symptoms, temp, etc and said that it was highly unlikely that it was H1N1, to watch him for four hours and then we'd know because swine flu generally hits like a Mack truck. I also asked about the vaccine since he was immunized Wednesday and she said that, while he doesn't have full immunity, after 5 days he'd have enough antibodies that H1N1 would not have him tossing his cookies. Anyway, ds is bouncing up and down, fighting with his sister and eating normally now so I think he's okay to go. It's still a waiting game because I want to make sure. I'm a big believer in keeping your kids home if they're sick, but especially w/ H1N1.

I personally think its alot of media hype, I've been noticeing alot of stories in the news, seems to hype things up, scare people etc... did you know 100's of people die daily in car accident in ontario? so 2 people have died from h1n1, relax.

your child is probably reacting to the h1n1 shot he had...

You know, I work in one of Calgary's major hospitals and I see first hand what has been happening with the flu. It's true this respiratory flu has been stronger than most of the ones that we have seen in the past. Having said that, the goverment as well as the media, are not giving people the full facts either. Vaccine or not, it all has to do with the strain that you catch. Your immune system is supposed to be down for 10 days following getting the vaccine. It's likely your kiddies are reacting to it or might have caught a small bug.

Hope your kids got better and you guys went on your trip :wizard:

Keep us posted :)

When we got our vaccines, we were told that they had an immunity booster in them, and it would help boost our immune system over the next 10 days, to help us not to get sick.....

I feel our immunity has been down since getting the shot. Sniffles and light coughs. We have mentioned Swine Flu more in the last week than we mentioned Disney. I am have to admit that it has put a damper on things ....

In Disney on Friday though .... MUST GET PSYCHED UP!
