What was shaping up to be an exciting final countdown to Disney just turned sour when my boss just gave me notice he is retiring and I am being let go effective immediately. Luckily this trip is a gift from my inlaws and we don't have any out of pocket expenses but it surely deflated my high spirits. I started sending out my résumé and hope that I'm able to let my worries drift away for at least the week I'm down there. In the mean time I'm trying to cut costs anyway I can.

I just wanted to say that I am sorry you being laid off. I truly do hope that in time you find a good job.

Enjoy your time in Disney, it is magical, try to live in the moment of Disney and have a wonderful time.

Had that happen to me several years go right before we went to Jamaica. Went on the trip, had a good time, came back and got another job.

What is your job title? I work as an IT Recruiter...so if you are in the IT domain I may be able to help you! I hope you find a new job soon!

I just wanted to say I'm sorry you lost your job. What a great gift from your in-laws!

Best Christmas present ever! Glad they paid for it and not me because that would stink knowing how much money I paid when I'll be struggling to pay bills until I find something.

So sorry. This has happened to us before and it is a stress and pain. While we do not have an upcoming trip planned my husband just lost his job. It's a pain but go on with your trip things always work out.

It happened to my wife about 5 years ago.
She interviewed with a company by phone in the car as I was driving.
They did a webmeet via the computer for a "face to face" interview from our room.
When entering the Magic Kingdom on Friday morning, she received a call that her new job started Monday morning.

Keep your head up. If you happen to be in the medical administration field, there are TONS of jobs in Louisville open right now.

Thanks for a positive story. In a way I don't want job searching to interfere with our trip but I guess if it involves interviewing then it's a good thing.

this happened to me two years ago 6 days before christmas and 4 days before we were to leave i got fired from my job of 11 years. I was beyond devastated at that time my husband immediately called and we had booked our first deluxe hotel changed it to a moderate so we could still go. When we got there my husband ended up getting sick so we had to leave 4 days early and then our car broke down 2 miles from our house Talk about a bad cloud over me. However i was home two days and was able to get a job so that part flowed pretty well.

Good luck to you and remember to enjoy yourself!

Happened to DH and he job searched from WDW over our Christmas trip some years ago. Recruiters, internet, smart phones...if you're going to job search, WDW is one heck of a place to do it from!:thumbsup2 DH was offered a position from a lead he received while waiting outside RNR, lol. It was 2 months later, but that Disney magic was alove and well. Good Luck, stay positive and enjoy your amazing gift/trip!

Thank you everyone for lifting my spirits. I just need to get back into packing excitement etc. I really don't want to be Debbie downer just as my family is starting to get excited about the trip.

I'm so sorry. I can't help but think this was unkind of your boss to give such little notice. Did he not plan to retire? It seems like he could have given you a head's up before this.

:confused3

This is exactly what I was thinking. How many people decide today that they will retire effective tomorrow? Probably none. That really stinks.

I hope you will still enjoy your vacation! I seem to always be able to let my problems go at Disney, or at least push them to the back of my mind for a while. I don't know what it is, but as soon as I pass under that arch I can feel myself relax. Good luck to you on finding a new job quickly, and having the best vacation ever despite what's happening in the real world. :wizard:

I've seen people get fired, laid off, or decide to quit, and then call it "retiring" so they can claim their pension benefits (and save face). Not too far fetched.

Exactly my thoughts when reading this post. Who the hell retires abruptly... 20 days before Christmas... Leaving his employees out of an income during the holidays? His name starts with E. And ends in Scrooge.

Ouch, at that point I would have been gunning for Murphy.
