hello all,
I have a question which hope someone has an answer for! Long story short we let our in laws use our points this week to go down to Disney for a vacation, which they haven't been able to do in a while.
Long story short they had to cut their trip short due to a medical emergency, making them leave 4 days early. We were refunded our points but apparently they were told that member services needs to be contacted to provide a refunded tickets for days not used and dining for points not used. Member services directed me to billing department. Who told them they cannot get a refund. Is this true? Who should I contact to help them get some money back? Thank you!

You may want to try Disney Guest Services for the tickets but I would wait until next week. I heard the wait times yesterday for ticket refunds were about 8 hours.

Sorry about the medical emergency. Disney may help but IMO they don't have to. We have been ill while at WDW, once our daughter required a hospital stay. They changed her unused ticket days to non-expiration, not ours.

As far as I know, you do not get refund on tickets or dining even for medical emergency. I have never heard or read of that before. On the other hand, It would not occur to me to try to get reimbursed. Medical emergencies, like other things in life, happen, and Disney does not owe us money back for that, anymore than they would for our car breaking down, or twisitng your ankle. To be refunded unused points is the best I could hope for, if that, as the DVC policies are clear. I would imagine a lot of medical emergencies happen at Disney every week given the sheer volume of daily attendance.

Disney makes it pretty clear that those things are not refundable. Do they make exceptions? Sometimes, but it would be just that - an exception.

Those are the costs that trip insurance is for. I can't speak to points use, but I would expect any refund/reduction of hotel room charges to be consistent with the hotel's posted cancellation policy (e.g. 48 hours notice/non-cancelable rate/etc.)

We had to cut a BWV trip short because our college aged kid got sick back in Georgia. We did not even get the points refunded. It is hit or miss if Disney/DVC helps you out. It was a miss for us, and you are already ahead with the refund of your points.

I am not surprised that partly-used park tickets are non-refundable, but dining too? Wow, that makes the dining plan MUCH less attractive.

If you didn't have an actual travel insurance plan you might want to see if the credit card used to pay for these expenses does. Many cards now offer travel insurance as an added benefit of the card. It will vary by bank and type of credit card, but that could be an option.

I'm confused... you let them borrow points to stay? And they want a refund of money? From what I understand, DVC reservations and packages are reserved under the actual DVC owner, you.

According to the fine print of the contracts, yeah, Disney does not have to refund anything money-wise. They *might* bank your points but I can't see them refunding actual money. They are dealing with the hurricane right now, whatever medical reason your in-laws had to leave for is a lower priority for Disney and your family MIGHT see some Pixie Dust but CM's are more than a little busy right now.

Annnnnnd this is what trip insurance is for. read that fine print too.

Correct me if I'm wrong as we've done the dining plan twice in 14+ years but aren't the general rules now that you have to add it up to 48 hours in advance of travel and you can't cancel it past that time? ie - it would be considered non-refundable once that 48 hour mark is reached?

Unfortunately, I have not ever heard of Disney giving any sort of refund for ticket days that go unused. In terms of the Dining plan, again, have not heard that they will refund partial days. I am happy to hear that MS was able to refund you the points for the stay and if they did that without holding restrictions, that is wonderful! But, as mentioned, I might contact Disney guest services as ask if there is a refund policy. The worst they say is no!

I thought that you couldn't add it past that time, but it didn't occur to me that you couldn't cancel or reduce the days past that time. My point is that, many people on the forum ask which is better, Tables in Wonderland or Dining Plan. I've never see people respond that if it works out about even, it's not worth it to go with something nonrefundable (Dining Plan). I'm sure the Tables in Wonderland card is nonrefundable, too, but you don't have to buy it in advance, and if you reschedule your plans, you're not out any money. People often say that even if it doesn't save them much money, the Dining Plan is worth it for the convenience. But not at that risk!

I've never heard of them giving a refund for the DP and we have often discussed that here as one of the limitations. I have read a couple of reports of them giving some options for tickets mostly buying a new ticket with a credit for the unused days or something. I've also seen them transfer passes for the rest of the term when someone passes. My guess is it depends on the specific reason and how generous the person you talk to is. The member needs to call and discuss this with Disney, this is not really a DVC issue, DVC has done what they could do and didn't have to if they returned the points.

They've changed it so you can change or cancel at 24 hrs but not add it past 48.
