Leather furniture and cats....do they mix?

I had leather like furniture once, it was a hand me down and already in bad shape but it was free so I took it. :) Anyway, the cats I had at the time destroyed it...we have 2 cats, 2 dogs and 2 kids now, we have microfiber, our current set is about 3 years old and still wearing well.

As for beanbag chairs, EVERY time I've had one of those my cats have PEED on them!!!!!!! YUCK!!!

I think it depends on the cat or cats. They each seem to have their own preferaces on what they like to scratch. Mine doesn't like leather, either to scratch or sit on for that matter. I moved in with a friend a while back who had a real leather couch and love seat. He had a cat who had no front claws, and my cat has all his claws.

My cat likes to scratch fabric and carpet, loves my carpets. He does occasionally go at my current couch that the best way I can describe it as really wide corduroy. Because of the fabric it does not show ANY scratches. But to be honest though I can't say how often he actually scratches the sofa, I really believe he only does it when I'm around. He will sit there with one paw on it till i look at him and yell to chase him off. Then he will scratch a few times until i actually start to get off my chair then he will run away. I have a theory that he only scratches when we are around like a game. :rotfl:

When we left the place with the leather there was not a mark on either one of the pieces. Not even from the two cats chasing each other across it. And there was alot of it, they did not exactly get along. I just wanted to state that it was the cat without claws that would do the chasing, Leroy who had all his claws would not fight back even if she had taken something of his. Just didn't want people thinking I had let my clawed cat loose on a defenseless one.

We have leather furniture and have no problems with our cat scratching it. She does love to lay on it. And...she does love to scratch all of our other furniture though.

When we were shopping for our leather furniture, salespeople at three different stores told us that cats hate leather. So, everytime our cat is lounged in DH's leather chair taking her afternoon nap, we laugh about how cats hate leather.
