Learning to swim , hints and tips please !

I have decided to bite the bullet and learn to swim. It's really ruining our family lifestyle as I cannot join in thr fun with the kids at the pool. I can swim in the pool up to 1 metre but when I step into a pool with a depth of 1.2 metres or more I'm petrified . Any hints or tips for me ?

Just go to your local swimming pool and sign up for lessons. They'll help you deal with it.

PS. If the water isn't even up to your waist, are you actually swimming, or just wading around?

As minnie mum said, sign up for lessons. They understand some people are total beginners, and they will help.

Find someone to help teach you that you trust.

Being as relaxed and confident as possible is important in learning any new skill.

Good luck and good for you for taking this step- I think everyone should be be able to swim for their own safety and pleasure.

After all these years I still remember the motivation I had to learned to swim. I probably was 8 years old at the time and my parents had installed a pool in the back yard of our California home.

I quickly learned it was great fun to wade around in the shallow area of the pool. The deep end terrified me though. One day dad made me an offer. If I swam to the deep end and back to the shallow, wearing a Donald duck inflatable, I could go to the toy store, and the ice cream shop. That was it! I practiced a doggy paddle around the shallow area for awhile. Later with dad watching I swam to the deep end and back. Off we went shopping after that.

Slight cheating with the inflatable I suppose, but it wasn't long after that till I felt comfortable without the floaty for support.

If you look for incentives to swim into the deep end, toy store can be updated with something more appropriate.
