Learning tablet for 7yo Girl?

My DD7 is outgrowing her Leapster2 and I was looking to see what the "next step" would be.

I saw the Leappad2 but it looks like that is only recommended up to age 9 and most of the games she would like are 4-7-ish.

I know I could get her an iPad, but I won't (too expensive right now).

Is there another good alternative?

I'm hoping for something to keep her attention/learning for the next 3-4 years, if possible.

I would also look at the Nook Tablet or Nook Color. My 9 year old has the Nook Color (got it for her birthday in January) and she loves it. Learning apps and books.

It's on sale today for $129! I would get that. My 6 year old loves mine and keeps taking it from me.

You should check out the Nabi 2 tablet. My DS6 has it and loves it. It runs on the Android OS, has a parent mode, can search the internet (with or without parental lock) and comes with all kinds of educational programs pre-loaded. It also comes with a child friendly rubber bumper.

Have you thought about an iPod touch? The 4th generation ones can be found for great prices now. I've got dozens of kid apps on my iPhone (both education types and for-fun types) that my kids love, many were free and some cost a few bucks, which I greatly prefer to buying the cartridges for the DS and Leapsters. Plus, it's got a camera!

I've got an original iPod touch and a 3rd gen and we're upgrading them both to 5th gen for xmas. I've got three kids that will get a lot of use out of them for the next several years!

Wow!! Thanks for all of the recommendations ... We are still looking into the systems you have listed and decided to wait until after Xmas. We need more time to compare and I didn't want to rush and buy the first thing on cyber Monday.

This. We are an apple family so already have a bunch of games and apps. We are getting my 10 yr old an iTouch this year. More portable and lots less money then an iPad. He can use mine if he needs it. We have DS's but not much for education and the games are pricey. Did the Leapster and Leapster pad thing and none of it ever was used as much as my iphone and iPad is. The amount of educational "games" is just amazing and in the case of my younger son making a huge difference in school this year.

My parents are giving the Nabi to my DD7 for Christmas. We looked at it in Best Buy and loved how it can grow with your child.....the parental controls are great, and it comes pre loaded with $250 worth of books, games and learning materials. We have the leap pad tablet, and she's starting to grow out of it, so the Nabi is going to be perfect.

I suggest the Apple iPod touch (8GB) for $129 or the 16GB for $20 more. There are plenty of apps for younger kids, and a plethora of educational ones as well. Also, tons of shows and music that she may like.

Plus: Make sure you get a case. At least an Otterbox, because even the slightest slip up (Mine slipped out of my hand and hit the wall) can cause damage (dents at the top and bottom).
