Learned some new things here in MI!!

You happen to live in the town where I was born, and spent my first 12 years and it is the best place to live ever! Well, unless you want good schools for your kids. How can you not love a town that has the world's biggest garage sale every year? They still do that, don't they?

I miss Michigan. Now where is that crying like a baby smiley?

The garage sale is in the summer! They still have the parking garage one, but I think there are others bigger.

Have your forgetten Michigan winters? Is it like childbrith and you don't remember it as bad as it was because of the good outcome? :cold:

Actually it has been really nice lately, but it is coming. It is coming. A week (or two) in FLA sure makes my whole winter better. This year we go in Jan, the bad thing is what do I have to look forward too all Feb, March and April? (we might go to CAL in May or maybe Vero Beach, have to see what airfare we can get.)

Oh and our schools really are going to pot lately. Rather concerned about that one. :guilty:

But RO does have it's cool parts still. :teeth:

oh and bucks? This is a MICHIGAN therad!!!!!!!!! Hellooooooooo ! :rolleyes1

Welcome to Michigan!! Don't forget soon you will hear that dreaded weather term..."Wind Chill"!! :earseek:
Wind Chill!! I knew I forgot one!

I was so proud that I made it through my first winter last year until everyone that has lived here for 5 years or more took great delight in informing me that last winter was "nothing"!! Great now I'm freaked out again!

Oh, and someone mentioned garage/yard sales. I had never been to one until we moved here. People here take it very seriously! Like a sport or something. :cheer2:

Oh I have no idea where Lake Ann is, but Royal Oak is in Oakland County, again, in case you missed the last post, the base of your thumb, and they use a city parking garage to host the world's biggest garage sale. You just walk through the four story garage and people set up thier sales like a flea market!

Like PHD said it is in summer and great deals to be had!

I was a kid during all my MI winters, and nothing beats the snow forts we made! The hot chocolate tastes better there too!

PHD, will you also do me one favor? Go to the Bread Basket Deli on Lincoln and Greenfield in Oak Park and eat a Jayme's Jubilee for me? I want one sooo bad!

Spring
Summer
Fall
Winter
& Hunting
Actually, there are seven. "Hunting" should be properly broken up in to: Bow, Firearm, and Muzzle Loader seasons!

DisneyPhD, where is Royal Oak? I am in Lake Ann which is in the middle of no where. Just kidding. Sort of. I'm about 25 minutes outside of Traverse City. Know where that is?

Last year when school started I had to ask my kids teacher how they should dress in the winter. I didn't know if they were supposed to wear their snow boots to school and then keep them on all day or what. You should have seen the other parents looking at me when I said that. Like I had two heads or something! I was so embarassed until they found out that we had just moved from CA. Then they only had one question....WHY? :confused3 :goodvibes

Ugh. I am not looking forward to another winter!! :cold: Okay no more snow talk out of me. Think Mickey and sunshine! ::MickeyMo :sunny:

Okay that answers my question!

One of the weather men in Traverse City was my best friend from when I was a kid.

My sister lives in Lewiston....about 1 hour from Traverse City.....is that anywhere near you??

Lars,

Tell the people, it is the BEST!!!!!!

Traverse City, is that near the index finger or the top of the middle finger? I always forget, and only know about the casinos run by Native Americans!

About 10 miles north of Detroit (less from the 8 mile boarder.) It is a nice littley centrally located metro area suburb. The Detroit zoo is actually in RO.

I had never heard of Lake Ann, but I know where TC is. Are you west or east of TC? I better it is pretty up there. I must admit I don't think I could move up there from even here, let alone CAL! In addtion to cold you ahve tiny towns. Where do you shop? Interent? Winters are much more tough almost every where else in Michigan then the south east corner. (but it is more beautiful everywhere else too. )

Ok, it is a deal Okay no more snow talk. Thinking Mickey and sunshine! ::MickeyMo :sunny:

Micocell, I know where that is, but I have never eaten there before.

What is in a Jayme's Jubilee? I can't have any dairy or eggs so I might not be able to eat it any more then you!

Latley my big foods are the pesant soup and orginal Olaga at Olaga's!
Did you ever eat at the onion roll on woodward? I love that palce!

Olgas! Yep and the Onion Roll!! Yum on both counts!

Jamies Jubilee is a QUADRUPLE DECKER, sadly with thousand island dressing and swiss cheese in addition to corned beef, pastrami, lettuce, tomato and bacon (I think) DS 3 was 4 months old the last time I was there. I must go back! I think if my best friend has her coworkers in the Sterling Heights Axle Plant order enough Girl Scout cookies this year, I may drive there to deliver them!!!! That would be January, so snow forts here we come!!!

I know where Royal Oak is. I grew up in inner city Detroit and then Hazel Park before we moved south.

Nobody in my family was a hunter so I didn't know about deer season. Not a real inner city Detroit thing in the 50s I guess.

When I lived in CA, I was remodeling my house one fall and a friend from Arkansas asked me how I got any contruction people during hunting season. I had to laugh. I don't think anyone in San Francisco is big on hunting.

That's it! DIS meet at Bread Basket! ;)

Hey I could do that!!!!!!!! Jamies Jubilee sounds good. I bet it is with out the cheese and dressing too (mustard does in a pinch) Oh I miss mayo! :guilty:

What about Chicken shack?

Now I am getting hungery.

But then again you have the yummy white fish place up near TC don't you mommaU4? I forget the name, it starts with an S and I know they have one in Mac city and another in Petosky I think. Yummy!!!!!!!!!!

arminnie, no hunting isn't a inner city thing. Saddly the guns are used for differnt reasons no a days. :guilty:  I have never understood the whole hunting things. When I was in HS it mostly was an excuse for guys to go up north and get drunk. I would guess it hasn't changed that much. :rolleyes1

I have been to Royal Oak and Livonia and Pontiac when I was younger for hockey tournaments. My sister in law lives in Sarnia about 3 minutes from teh bridge to Port Huron and my FIL sails in the Macniac sailing race don't ask me what it is called I hate sailboats LOL. It seems you folks in Michigan are getting more snow in the winter than we are here in southwestern Ontario and that sucks winter is my absolute favourite time of year. I long for the winters of the old days you know the late 70's early 80's when we would get over 4 feet of snow in the winter.

OMG I feel so dumb because I don't know how to explain where Traverse City is! I don't get the mitten/glove/hand thingy either. Well, what do you expect? I'm a blonde from sunny CA. who spent her first year here in denial, desperately trying to find a way "home" while listening to Randy Newman's "I love L.A." over and over.

I have snapped out of it, and am trying to fit in, but I have a long ways to go. When we first moved here I couldn't even give delivery people directions. I was like,"Turn right at the barn with the 3 horses and left at the fallen tree." It was nuts. I could navigate the L.A. freeway system during rush hour traffic but would get lost on these "country roads". :confused3

DisneyPhD, to answer your question, Lake Ann is tiny with nothing but a mom&pop grocery, but in Traverse City we have alot of things. Mall has Marshall Fields, Target, T.J. Maxx, all the little stores like Victoria's Secret, Kay Bee toys, Hallmark, Express, Bath and Body, Etc. We have Sears, Michaels, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Gap, Kohls, Younkers, etc. And we have all the fast food places and most of the chain restaurants like Applebee's, Outback, Red Lobster, Chili's, Olive Garden, Cracker Barrel, etc. Plus several local shops and restaurants that are great.

It's actually a big tourist destination believe it or not. We have a Great Wolf Lodge here too. Although we haven't been there yet... ;) It's taken some getting used to though. To come here from L.A. was almost like moving to a different country. Even some of the words are different. Like the soda being called pop. I still can't get used to that. :rotfl:

People are very conservative here to. They were trying to open a strip club and it was such a huge deal!! People were in such an uproar. DH and I were like "what's the big deal". We used to live about 20 minutes from San Fernando Valley a.k.a. the porn capital of the world! We just have a more laid back attitude it seems sometimes, but I'm trying! :flower:

Born and bred Detroiter here. Moved to TN with my family years ago. Funny, but I still miss some things about MI: RedPop, Vernor's, Sanders' fudge sauce, good Polish bakeries in Hamtramck, and that one over in Dearborn on Telegraph that I forget the name of. But not: winter, snow, walking home from school and freezing for 10 blocks (we were much too "cool" to wear gloves and boots, you know!), our backyard being frozen-over for my brother to play hockey all winter. Where I live now, we have maybe 1" of snow in a good year, only once in 20 years have we had more than 6", and that was called a blizzard!

Did someone say Chicken Shack....now I am hungry. I love their chicken, ribs and broasted potatoes. I think that is what we are having for dinner tonight. :flower:

Lake Ann is very nice. We go through there on our way to the Sleeping Bear Dunes area.

I love the Traverse City area. It is so beautiful. But the traffic in TC is so bad anymore. It's really beginning to be a big city.

I moved to Michigan five months ago and one thing that I didn't know about before is the "Michigan left". :moped:
