I learned a little lesson today, that anyone away on DVC stay should, or maybe already do, know.

I have a vacant townhouse that has been for sale for a few months. Two months ago the water usage was 0 (zero) for the month. Last month it was 25,000 gallons.

Come to find out that the problem is I put a Clorox Toilet Tank Tablet in the toilet tanks. Normally, this would be ok when the toilets are used multiple times daily. The tank water gets refreshed and the chlorine level is kept low. However, when the toilet goes unused for a period of time, the chlorine builds and it deteriorates the rubber flapper that holds the water in until flush time.

I have been one to plop one of those things into our tank the day we leave for our resort to keep the nasty things from growing while we are gone. But now I look back and realize that I have much too frequently had to replace that flapper because of leaking, and I now understand why.

We have well water, so I never had the water bill to wake me up and understand the connection. Bottom line... When you leave for your DVC destination... Don't put a chlorine tablet in your toilet tank.

Experience is... 2020 hind-sight with a nicer name.

Chlorine is an environmental disaster anyway - there are other less toxic ways to clean a toilet, like a little bit of Lysol bowl cleaner and a brush :)

Agreed... I wasn't trying to clean the toilet bowl... I clean our toilet bowls every Saturday with a sponge in hand. I am not afraid of cleaning a toilet.

I was trying to stem off the things that come with standing water. A toilet can become a real smell problem if left alone for a period of time, and I was just trying to give it that clean chlorine smell (trying to sell this place).

Not sure what Lysol has (environment friendly) as ingredients that kills living organisms, but I am with you that I made mistake in thinking that Clorox was a good answer.

As I said.. I learned a little lesson today. I was just trying to tell others to not use this method to keep their toilets clean while they are away at their resort.

I appreciate your understanding and sharing of best ways to helping the environment though... Truly.

I had no idea this could happen. Thanks for sharing.
