I've searched all over LeapFrogs website, it appears I will not find out till after purchase? I downloaded the application for the LeapPad and still nothing. I know the games are the same price, but what about the LeapFrog movies and additional apps? Is there a huge variety?

From what I can see on the app program...

Ultra books (Cars2, Cinderella, Leapschool)- $20
ebooks- $7.50
Games- mostly $10, but a few at $7.50 and a few at $25
Videos- $7.50 and $10
Creativity (animation and make stories)- $10
Expansions (Cars2, Spongebob and Mr Pencil)-$7.50
Flash cards- $5

On the Ultra books, it looks like they are animated and you can adjust the reading level between level 2-4.

YOUR GREAT!! Im actually printing this list out! Family members every year ask what to get my kids and I did not want to tell everyone a LeapFrog App card and then have $100 in LeapFrog app money but nothing to buy:laughing: Theres a bigger selection than I thought AWESOME! This is going to be perfect for our next roadtrip! Since you offered :cheer2: LeapPad assistance i do have questions :flower3: :goodvibes
How does the memory hold up with all the downloads?
Whats the difference between a $10 game vs the $24 cartridge?
What does the expansion apps do?
Is the stylus pen attached by a string?
Did you buy rechargable batteries?
How about the accessories? Case worth it? Gel Cover?

:rotfl: I was thinking I cant WAIT to play with this

Also, would this be too simple for an 8.5 year old? DD8 is asking for it for Christmas. She would also like an iPod touch but I am reluctant to buy one this year as she has a DSi and an iPod nano (DH gave her his when he upgraded to the iPhone). She knows an iPad is out of the question(not spending $500) so she wants the leappad as it is the only "pad" she can get. She also wants to be able to take videos. Not sure it is worth the $ as I believe it is geared for younger kids. Is this right?

I believe it is geared toward younger kids not saying your DD would not enjoy it though =) I can see my DD7 and DD9 wanting to check this out! I would go for the iPod Touch if I were you, it would more than likely replace the nano and DSi all together. I am getting 2 LeapPads for my 4 & 5 year old and then 2 iPod Touches for my 7 & 9 yr old :goodvibes

:

Not the pp but I can answer some of these.

Memory wise it holds a lot. I spent about 100 in the app store as well as adding the free games and there is still plenty of mememory.

The 24 cartridges are longer games. Kind of like a ds game. You work on it slowly over time. The 7.50 and 10 games are focused on one thing and usually have various levels expanding on the theme.

The expansion packs are additional levels to the main game. You must have the main game in order to use the expansion app. If your kid really likes a game then the expansion packs just offer more areas for them to explore and play in the game.

There are two pens. One has a string that you can attach it to the system with and the other does not.

I bought eneloop rechargeable batteries for our. Well worth it!

The case and screen protector were not available when I bought ours. My kids are pretty good with electronics so we haven't had any issues. I would like to get a screen protector though since they let their friends use their leappads and I wouldn't want them scratched.

I can see my ds playing with it for years (He is 7). However at 8 1/2 your child may outgrow it soon. I'm hoping leapfrog sees the demand for games for older kids and rolls with it but educationally, at 8 1/2 they wont get too much from it. Would an 8 year old have fun with it though, yes I think so! I don't think it will stop your 8 year old from wanting an ipod touch though.

Since you offered :cheer2: LeapPad assistance i do have questions :flower3: :goodvibes

How does the memory hold up with all the downloads?
The memory needed varies between each item. Once you have things downloaded into the Leappad app on your computer, it is very easy to add and remove things from your Leappad (and it stays on your app center). You just connect your Leappad to the computer and move things around. For example you could load it up with videos for a roadtrip, but remove them if you need room to do something else. Once you pay for them, they stay in your app center so you can add them back at anytime.

The Leappad has 2 GB of built in memory. We have quite a bit loaded on ours and still have plenty of room. Here are some examples of the size of the apps:

Ultrabooks- range from 62MB-92MB
Games-range from 1-65MB
Videos- range from 50-133MB (Leapfrog ones are around 60 and nature type are higher)
Creativity-range from 25-75MB (the story ones are the larger ones)
Expansions-range from 5-15MB
eBooks- range from 5-35MB
Flashcards- range from 15-20MB

Whats the difference between a $10 game vs the $24 cartridge?
I'm not 100% on this one yet. A few of the games that we bought on a cartridge are now available as downloads for the $25 price. They aren't all available but maybe they are moving that direction. That would mean not having to use an actual cartridge. From what I can tell, the more inexpensive games are the more generic type- alphabet stew, jewel train, number bash. And the more expensive ones are branded or more extensive- Globe- Earth, Ni-Hao Kai-lan etc. The nice thing about the apps are as soon as you purchase them, they are available for download which could be very useful in some situations.

What does the expansion apps do?
The expansion apps are extra levels and activities for games you already have.

Is the stylus pen attached by a string?
Yes, there is a string to attach the stylus to the Leappad. You also get an extra stylus. The one in the Leappad when you open it doesn't have a string, but there will be another one in the box with the string- so just switch them out.

Did you buy rechargable batteries?
Yes, we are using rechargeable batteries. The kids played with it so much the first day we had to recharge! But we haven't had to recharge yet since then. Just jinxed myself- batteries need recharging.

How about the accessories? Case worth it? Gel Cover?
I ordered the case, but haven't received it yet. The kids like to take it in the car and I'm always paranoid it is going to be dropped. So I will be glad to have the case. It also holds 6 cartridges which is nice. The Gel Cover wasn't available yet, so I didn't order it. I like the idea of the gel cover for the extra grip. I am curious it would fit in the case with the gel cover on or not- I could see a use for both. Around the house the gel cover would be nice, but I also like the case to carry when we leave the house.

I found a description of the Ultra ebooks:
3 levels of text
3 modes where children can listen to the story, read along with the story, or read and explore activities on their own
6 comprehension activties leveraging the tablet's accelerometer and 3 fun games
Ability to record and play back personal story narration

I would say that it is geared towards the 4-7 age range the most although others that are a little younger or a little older would enjoy it as well. I have an almost 4 year old and almost 7 year old and both enjoy different things.

We really like the creativity things- the Story Studio and Art Studio apps. The Disney Animation one is fun. They like using both the camera and video- both are decent quality for what they are.

There is a lot we still haven't explored, but it is a lot of fun and there is definitely a lot of educational value.

WOW...this all does sound really pretty amazing! I am more convinced, however, that we are making the right choice in waiting till NEXT Hanukkah to invest in this for my DD who just turned 3. This year she's getting a puppet theatre...but next year, the Leappad for sure. :thumbsup2

Am I the only one who sees this LeapPad as a bit of a money pit?! We already have a million commercials on the Leapster Explorer (Have your parents connect your leapster explorer to your computer to buy XXXX), but now the apps for this LeapPad are $20 each?! Yikes...

That's almost as much as a game cartridge. Leapfrog knows what it's doing!

The games we bought for the explore work with the leap pad so no money lost

What does it initially come with for games, activities, etc. already installed? Anything?

I believe I read theres 1 free app download? Plus theres basic things like drawing already on it =) Comes with 2 stylus. And thats it. Rechargable batteries are optional, as well as a case, and gel skin. You can buy as many games before hand as you would like. You can find some Leapster Explorer games on clearance or wait till after Christmas to find a few clearanced out

You might want to look at Android tablets if you want to do a tablet. I don't have one, but I love my android phone, and I know they are a LOT cheaper than an ipad.

My youngest will be 3 in March... for those of you who have these, do you think that's way too young for this? I know he won't be able to really get the functions of the games (math, reading skills, etc), but he loves playing with his older brothers' leapster explorers, DSIs, and he loves playing with our iphones. Do you think he'll enjoy this enough at almost 3? He's very advanced for his age, if that helps:lmao:

I have two of these stashed in my closet for my kids birthday next month. My understanding is that we can share the aps. Is that correct? Can the books be shared as well?

Yes purchases from the LeapFrog store can be shared :cool1: We bought 2 as well and this was a BIG plus!
