DD is 4 yrs old. I am thinking of getting her a reader where I can buy the books and she has the pen or whatever to read it to her. I don't know ANYTHING about these. What kind would you recommend? How much are they?

Sounds like you're talking about the Leapster Tag. I have one for my DS (6 yrs) and am getting one for my DD (she will be 4 in Feb) for Christmas. We got one for DS when he turned 5 and he uses it just about daily. It's been great in motivating him to read!

They are around $40 for just the Tag reader itself, no books. Leapfrog has a sale right now online- spend $50 and save $10 plus free shipping. I got his cheaper than that on sale before Christmas at Walmart. Just be sure you get the 32MB one that holds 10 books. There is a cheaper one that's 16MB but it only holds 5 books at a time.

I looked online at the Tag. Do you buy the books and then read with the special pen?

The pen only works with the Leapster Tag books. Once you buy the books you hook the Tag pen up to the computer and download the stories to the Tag pen. The pen comes with the connector for the computer. You can change the books stored on the Tag Reader at any time but it will only hold 10 books at a time.

Wanted to add-
It does lots. Your child can read and use the pen if he gets stuck on a word or have the book read to him. It also has "games" on the pages which really aid in comprehension skills. All of the stories are voiced really fun- the pirate book has pirate characters, etc.

My 3.5 year old got the leapfrog tag for Christmas last year and she loves it! It's great! She even brings the pen in the car on trips and listens to the stories. (she gets carsick easily so she can't look down at books) I would order it from the website- they always have promo codes for percents off and free shipping.
